Empire State Building Eagles Shade

The Empire State Building threw random shade at the Eagles over the weekend, proving yet again buildings shouldn’t have social media accounts

The Empire State Building, New York City’s most overrated tourist trap lit up green after the Eagles absolutely terrorized the Commanders in the NFC Championship, winning 55-23 and punching their ticket to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.’

Yes, I know. The Empire State Building does this all the time for big events and moments. We’ve seen it before and we’ll undoubtedly see it again. This wasn’t new. They did it when the Birds beat the 49ers in the NFC title game a few years back too. Nobody is confused about how the lights work.

Still funny watching that giant slab of concrete glow Eagles green while the New York Giants and Jets sit in a dark corner, thumb in mouth, staring at their phones.

The city’s most famous building acknowledged your most hated (and closest) rival while both of your NFL teams that play in New Jersey continue to rot in peace.

Tough scene. That said, let’s be clear. I’m not giving the Empire State Building any credit.

I haven’t forgotten how they treated Joel Embiid during the NBA Playoffs.

They banned him from the building after he dropped 50 on the Knicks, then tried to play it off like they were being clever.

Now they’re back taking random, unprovoked shots at the Eagles for engagement.

Over the weekend, the dork running their X account decided to tweet something along the lines of “snow may be in the forecast but the Eagles playing tonight certainly isn’t.” Obviously, that made absolutely zero sense. It’s not like anyone in New York were playing football, either.

The Jets haven’t been relevant since 1969, the Giants are a national punchline, and somehow the Empire State Building thought it was time to chirp the Eagles?

Empire State Building. Embarrassing.

This is what happens when brands and buildings get social media accounts.

It’s all engagement farming. Nobody actually cares what a skyscraper thinks about football. It’s just some intern trying to be edgy and hoping Eagles fans will quote-tweet them into relevance.

Now I’m writing about it, so mission accomplished… I guess.

Anyways, New York football has been dead for decades. Both the Giants and Jets stink. So instead of fixing that, they let a building talk trash online. Embarrassing. Buildings having social media accounts is loser energy. Fast food chains, corporations, landmarks. All of it. It’s corny. It’s forced. It needs to die.

That said, if New York insists on starting a building pissing match on Twitter, then Philly needs to wake up. One Liberty Philadelphia hasn’t tweeted since COVID. Independence Hall, the literal birthplace of the United States of America, stayed silent.

That can’t happen. Independence Hall is where the Declaration of Independence was signed. The country started there and we couldn’t get one tweet? Big miss.

So no, I’m not impressed by the Empire State Building lighting up green. It’s still overrated. The social media account is still cringe and whatever nerd running their socials has watched that building light up in celebration for the Eagles more times than any sports team in NYC over the past decade.

Other buildings tweeting about Philly sports is corny. Leave us alone.
