WATCH: Nick Foles delivered a few encouraging words about former teammate and new Eagles OC Sean Mannion
Nick Foles dropped a few thoughts on the Eagles new OC Sean Mannion and thankfully, none of it felt like empty hype from a former teammate.
Foles said Mannion was “one of the more impressive rookies” he’s ever been around, and he wasn’t talking about arm talent or highlight throws.
He talked about work ethic, football IQ, and the kind of recall that makes you wonder if a guy has a photographic memory.
Basically, Nick Foles said Mannion either remembered everything instantly or he was grinding so hard with studying and prep that it looked like he did.
Either way, the message was clear. Mannion was built like a future coach from the jump, and Nick Foles always assumed he’d climb the ladder. He just didn’t think it would happen this fast.

Official: Eagles hire Sean Mannion to be their next offensive coordinator
This connection goes back to the 2015 Rams, when Foles and Mannion were in that quarterback room with Case Keenum. That year was a weird pit stop for Foles between Eagles stints and it wasn’t exactly a great season for him.
Then the Rams drafted Jared Goff the next year, moved to Los Angeles, hired Sean McVay, and the whole franchise flipped into what it is now.
Mannion was in that building for the early stages of that transformation, and if you’re looking for where the “aha” moment happened, it’s probably the 2017 season when McVay and Matt LaFleur were building the offense that ended up influencing half the league.
Obviously, Nick Foles wasn’t going to trash Mannion either way, but at least it wasn’t the generic “good guy” shit that we typically hear from members of the media. Foles talked about things that translate to coaching, mentioning preparation, detail, command of the playbook, and being obsessed with the small stuff.
That lines up with what you keep hearing about Mannion. “Student of the game” gets thrown around way too much, but in his case it actually fits. He’s been in NFL rooms, been around real systems, and has a reputation for being diligent and locked in.
If you’re the Eagles and you’re trying to stabilize an offense and get the week-to-week operation cleaner, that’s the profile you want. Don’t get me wrong, a play caller is great but a guy who lives in the details is significantly better.
Foles basically said Mannion is the type of mind that was always going to end up coaching, and now he’s doing it in Philly with the keys to the offense. If you’re searching for reasons to feel better about the hire, start with this.
If Sean Mannion really is that guy, the one who remembers everything and outworks everyone, then the Eagles might have found their next offensive brain.
