Sixers sign former Chicago Bulls first round pick Dalen Terry to a two-way contract

The Sixers keep shuffling deck chairs and this time the name is Dalen Terry.

Philly signed the 23 year old wing to a two way deal right before the matchup with the New York Knicks, sliding him into the opening that popped up once Dominick Barlow was converted from his two way into a standard NBA contract after the deadline.

On paper it is minor housekeeping. In reality it is another example of how chaotic this roster has felt for months.

Dalen Terry’s path here is absurd even by modern NBA standards. Drafted 18th overall by the Chicago Bulls in 2022, he got ping ponged around the league in about five minutes.

Chicago flipped him to the Knicks, the Knicks rerouted him to the New Orleans Pelicans, and New Orleans cut him loose. A couple days later he is in Philadelphia signing paperwork. Welcome to the league, kid, hope you kept the suitcase.

What are the Sixers actually getting? A 6 foot 6 athlete with real experience. Over 200 pro games. Some defensive tools. Offensively he is still very much a project.

He is a career 31.9 percent shooter from three and before getting spun through the trade machine he averaged 7.8 points over his last four in Chicago. There is talent there. There is also a reason three teams moved on in rapid succession.

Welcome to Philly Dalen Terry

The funny part is the expectations. When you sign someone on a two way, fans immediately want to know how fast he can help, whether he can crack the rotation, whether he is some hidden gem. Slow down. The CBA math is brutal. With the season calendar where it is, Terry can only be active for 18 of the final 29 games. Eighteen. That is part time, substitute teacher, see you when we see you stuff.

So think of this for what it is. Dalen Terry is depth and a flyer on a former first round pick who still has physical upside and might benefit from a change of scenery. If he pops, great, you found something. If he does not, you shake hands and keep it moving.

It’s another reminder of where the Sixers are, trying to thread the needle between competing right now and patching holes that keep appearing. Dalen Terry gets a chance and sometimes that is all a young player needs.

We will find out soon enough if it turns into more than just another transaction blurb.
