Battle of Pennsylvania: Sheetz set to invade the heart of Wawa Country in DELCO
The unthinkable is happening. Sheetz is trying to build in DELCO. The western front has officially fallen, and now they’re marching straight into the epicenter of Wawa-land.
Sheetz has plans on building a new location at Route 1 and 202 in DELCO, a mere five miles from Wawa HQ. It’s a stone’s throw from the birthplace of the goose and shouldn’t even be talked about as an expansion. This is an invasion on Eastern Pennsylvania and all things considered, Wawa isn’t doing a damn thing about it.
Before we get into it, I saw Crossing Broad try to argue that Chadds Ford isn’t Delco and I’m sorry, what are we doing here? Chadds Ford is Delaware County. Glen Mills is Delaware County. Garnet Valley is Delaware County.
This is not a debate. This is geography. You can pull up a map. It’s right there. If anything, the rest of the county should be thanking us for carrying the aesthetic.
Without Chadds Ford, Glen Mills, and Garnet Valley, Delco is basically a Wawa parking lot with a SEPTA stop and a terrible public image problem.
We bring a little polish to the operation. A touch of class, if you will. We offer a few winding roads and preserved spaces so the whole county doesn’t look like one continuous stretch of MacDade Boulevard and somehow we’re the ones catching strays?
At this point, maybe we should just apply for a transfer to Chester County. See how that feels. If we’re going to get disrespected anyway, at least let us sit at the adult table.
Speaking of disrespect, how exactly is Wawa just letting Sheetz waltz into Chadds Ford like this?
It’s the early stages but if approved, Sheetz would be built at the Village at Painters’ Crossing, right at the intersection of Route 1 and 202. That’s basically sacred ground. It’s about five miles from Wawa’s corporate headquarters and across the county from their first-ever store in Folsom.
This is not neutral territory. This is Wawa’s backyard.
The proposed site would take over the vacant former bank and the old Carrabba’s at the northeast corner of the complex. Sheetz has only submitted a sketch plan. Zoning changes and approvals would still be needed, according to the township solicitor. Public affairs people are doing the usual “it’s early in the process” dance.
Let’s not play dumb. If this thing gets approved, Sheetz would plant its flag in three of the four Philly collar counties. They already opened in Limerick. They’ve floated plans in Downingtown. Now they’re eyeing Delco. This is expansion mode.
And Wawa is just going to… what? Watch?
The corner of 1 and 202 is surrounded by Wawas. You can throw a soft pretzel and hit one. This is not underserved territory. This is a declaration of war. Sheetz is basically saying, “We don’t care how many goose logos you’ve got, we’re coming.”
I genuinely don’t understand how Wawa can just sit back and allow that. This is their brand heartland. Their spiritual home. You’re telling me they’re cool with Sheetz putting a red canopy right next to five different Wawas and siphoning off late-night traffic?
Maybe competition is healthy. Maybe Delco can handle two gas station empires battling for supremacy at the same intersection but let’s not pretend this is small. Sheetz planting a flag in the middle of Wawa country and daring them to respond is an act of war.
If this thing gets approved, Delco better at least acknowledge one thing. Chadds Ford is Delco and apparently, so is Sheetz now.
