LaMelo Ball

LaMelo Ball somehow walks free after Charlotte crash, which is ridiculous

I’m not trying to overreact here. Actually, yes I am. Because if you’re a max-contract NBA star (LaMelo Ball) making nine figures and you’re whipping around Uptown Charlotte in a custom Hummer like you’re in The Dark Knight maybe, just maybe, you shouldn’t be behind the wheel anymore.

According to local reports, officials have decided not to file criminal charges against LaMelo Ball following his February 18th crash in Charlotte. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has also declined to release details about what exactly caused the accident.

LaMelo Ball Car Crash

So legally? He’s in the clear.

What Actually Happened?

Ball was driving his custom-built Hummer through Uptown Charlotte when he collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Tryon Street and Trade Street.

Two-car accident.

Another video angle later surfaced that appeared to show Ball swerving into the sedan’s lane before impact. His front left tire was reportedly dislodged in the crash.

That’s not a fender bender. That’s a “you probably shouldn’t be Tokyo Drifting through downtown traffic” situation.

Ball walked away uninjured, rocking a Hornets hoodie like he just left shootaround. Meanwhile, reports indicate the other driver suffered injuries — thankfully not serious — but still injured.

No Criminal Charges… For Now

Local officials have opted not to pursue criminal charges. That’s their call.

But just because something isn’t criminal doesn’t mean it isn’t reckless.

And let’s not pretend civil court isn’t still on the table. When another driver gets hurt and there’s video floating around? Lawyers start licking their chops.

This isn’t some random 22-year-old with a Honda Civic. This is the face of the franchise for the Charlotte Hornets.

Regardless it’s quite clear LaMelo Ball is in good spirits as he’s played in every Hornets game since then and he went off last night.

Look, I’m not rooting for anyone to get arrested. I’m not rooting for lawsuits. I’m not rooting for injury.

But I am rooting for common sense.

If video appears to show you swerving into traffic in a tank-sized custom Hummer, maybe the solution isn’t “no charges, carry on.”
