There might not be a more important person in American sports right now than Ellen Hughes
While social media has spent the last 48 hours completely losing its mind over President Trump’s call to the USA Hockey team, Ellen Hughes offered the only quote that actually matters.
Ellen Hughes on President Trump’s call to the USA Hockey team
“At the end of the day, it’s just about the country. That’s all the men’s team and women’s team care about. If you could see what we see from the inside, and the men and women sharing dorm rooms and halls and flex floors and the camaraderie and the way the women cheered on the men and the way the men cheered on the women, that’s what it’s all about.”
USA Hockey is on a heater in Miami and not even the depressing folks on social media can ruin it >>
Nobody going on tirades on either side of the political spectrum right now was in either of those rooms. Ellen Hughes was and she knows these players better than anyone.
Here is what makes her story so remarkable.
Ellen Hughes was a three-sport athlete at the University of New Hampshire, playing hockey, lacrosse, and soccer. She went on to represent Team USA at the 1992 Women’s World Hockey Championship.
After her playing career she had three sons. All three of them became first round NHL draft picks.
Two of those sons just won the first Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey in 46 years, and they did not just win it, they each scored an overtime goal to make it happen.
Quinn scored the game winner in overtime against Sweden in the quarterfinals. Jack scored the golden goal against Canada in the final.
On top of all of that, Ellen Hughes has been working as a player development consultant for the US Women’s team since 2023. Which means she had a direct hand in USA Hockey winning Olympic gold in both the men’s and women’s tournaments at the same Olympics.
If you can find someone who has had more impact on American sports in recent memory, the floor is yours. The thing about social media is that it is not real life.
The people going absolutely unhinged on Twitter right now over a phone call do not know what was in that locker room. They do not know these athletes.
Ellen Hughes knows all of them. Ellen Hughes raised a few of them.
When she says that all these players care about is winning, making their country proud, and bringing everyone together, that is not a talking point. That is a mother who watched her sons share the ice with their teammates and knows exactly who they are.
“These players, both the men and women, can bring so much unity to a group and to a country. People that cheered them on that don’t watch hockey, people that have politics on one side or on the other side, and that’s all both the men’s team and the women’s team care about.”
That is the whole story. Everything else is noise.
