Torino fans dumped an actual truckload of manure at their club’s facility and American sports fans need to take notes

Forget the “Sell The Team” billboards. Torino fans have raised the bar considerably.

Videos surfaced this week of Torino fans shoveling manure onto the doorstep of the team’s training ground, complete with a banner aimed at club owner and media mogul Urbano Cairo that read “merde come Cairo,” which translates roughly to “shit like Cairo.”

Cairo has owned the Serie A club since 2005, and supporters have been trying to push him out for years under the belief that he lacks the ambition to take the club where it needs to go.

Torino just pulled off one of the most creative and committed sports protest we have seen in a long time.

Not a billboard. Not a hashtag. Not a strongly worded open letter. An actual truck. Filled with actual manure. Dumped at the front door with a sign. That is a statement. That is someone who has thought about this, made some calls, and followed through.

This is something American sports fans need to seriously consider adopting.

European soccer supporters have never been shy about making their feelings known in physical, unmistakable terms. What do we do over here? We tweet. We go on sports radio. We make a graphic.

Meanwhile fans across the Atlantic are out here sourcing agricultural waste to express their displeasure with management. There is a commitment level there that frankly puts us to shame.

Obviously, the Sixers come to mind immediately.

Joshua Harris and Daryl Morey have earned some form of creative protest at this point. Truckloads of manure at all entrances to the Wells Fargo Center feels proportionate. Yes, the Flyers also play there, but maybe they could use a little message too. It is not exactly a great situation on that side of the building either.

The funniest part of the Torino story is that they are not even in the relegation zone yet. They have three points separating them from the drop, they lost a few matches in a row, and someone decided that the time to act was now, before things get even worse. Pre-emptive manure. Proactive outrage.

Torino fans did not wait for rock bottom. They brought rock bottom to the facility themselves. Respect, honestly.
