Matthew Berry says Dallas Goedert will ‘definitely be moving on’ from the Eagles
Matthew Berry is reporting that Dallas Goedert will definitely be moving on from Philadelphia, and while it stings a little, it is hard to argue with the reality of the situation.
Dallas Goedert has been a great Eagle. The numbers back that up completely. In 108 regular season games he caught 409 passes for 4,676 yards and scored 35 touchdowns. In 13 playoff games he added 56 catches for 595 yards and six more scores.
He was one of the better tight ends in the NFL during his peak and he was a significant part of two Super Bowl runs. He got his ring. He earned it.
Report: Dallas Goedert will definitely be moving on from the Eagles
The honest assessment of where things stand is pretty clear. Dallas Goedert was more available last season but was asked to do considerably less than in previous years.
His blocking was a problem. His peak performances have historically come in seasons where he was playing through injuries and the offense was leaning on him out of necessity, which is a complicated thing to build a contract extension around.
Not to mention, the financial reality is that the Eagles have a cap to manage and an offense that needs to get younger and healthier.
Nobody is going to fault the front office for this one. You cannot re-sign everyone. That is the nature of building a team under a salary cap and the Eagles have done an exceptional job of managing that balance.
Dallas Goedert at 30 years old is likely going to want a multi-year commitment at tight end money, and the Eagles probably cannot justify that when they have other priorities and a younger roster construction in mind.
It’s been a good run. Dallas Goedert has been a quality Eagle for a long time and whatever city gets him next is getting a good player.
If this is truly the end, thanks for everything, Dallas. It was a good one.
