Good: NBA fans relentlessly trashed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for his fur coat postgame presser
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander walked into his postgame press conference at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night wearing what can only be described as an oversized fur coat that made him look like he was transporting a large mammal from one location to another.
Finally. Something to criticize Oklahoma City about. This felt like the first real opening we have had in a very long time, especially here in Philly.
They took Jared McCain from us. Daryl Morey handed him over, yes, but the Thunder were the beneficiaries and we have not forgotten.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dressed like an idiot
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander looked like a mascot. There is no other way to put it.
I do not know what is going on with NBA players and this particular brand of fashion statement but the fur coat era needs to be examined more critically than it currently is.
It is genuinely hard to take a man seriously when he is cosplaying as Pooh Bear in a postgame press conference. The internet had its fun with it and rightfully so.
The other reason it is hard to take SGA seriously, separate from the coat entirely, is that he is one of the biggest foul merchants the sport has ever produced.
The man has turned drawing fouls into a performance art form and the referees have been enthusiastic participants for years. Honestly the fur coat almost felt like a humiliation ritual the refs put him in after the game as payment for their services.
That said.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander went out there and dropped 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting with 8 assists in 35 minutes against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
Then he went right back to the postgame press conference and sat there in the fur coat with the full confidence of a reigning MVP on the defending champions.
The coat did not make him look ridiculous in the end. The performance made the coat work. That is the privilege of being Shai Gilgeous-Alexander right now. You can wear whatever you want until someone proves on the court that you cannot, and nobody has managed to do that yet.
The Thunder host Golden State and Stephen Curry on Saturday at Paycom Center. The Shai Gilgeous-Alexander pregame fit will be a situation worth monitoring.
