Abner Uribe Brewers Crotch Chop Cardinals

Brewers pitcher Abner Uribe hit the Cardinals dugout with a DX Crotch Chop, refused to apologize postgame

Brewers reliever Abner Uribe closed out a 6-0 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday night in Milwaukee and then stopped on the mound, turned toward the St. Louis dugout, and hit them with a full Degeneration X crotch chop. It wasn’t a subtle one either.

Abner Uribe didn’t do a little hip thrust that could be explained away as adrenaline. A deliberate, blatant, pointed-directly-at-the-opposing-dugout crotch chop. The man went full Kenny Powers on national television and I’ve never been more impressed by a relief pitcher in my life.

After the game, Uribe apologized to his teammates, his fans, and his manager Pat Murphy. He did not apologize to the Cardinals.

When asked about it, he said Cardinals manager Oli Marmol was making gestures toward the Brewers’ dugout during the game, pointing to his ribs, essentially threatening to have his pitchers hit Milwaukee hitters. Uribe said he has his teammates’ backs. Always.

Abner Uribe apologizes to everyone except the Cardinals

“I understand that it’s unacceptable to go out there and react like that. At the same time, I don’t think it’s professional for their manager to be making signs towards our dugout saying that he’s going to be hitting guys.”

So let me get this straight. The Cardinals’ manager was allegedly gesturing from his dugout that he was going to order his pitchers to hit Brewers batters. Uribe saw it. And instead of ignoring it, he struck out the side, turned toward the Cardinals dugout, and hit them with a crotch chop. That’s not a controversy. That’s a man defending his teammates in the most disrespectful way possible. I love every single thing about it.

The Context Makes It Even Better

The Cardinals apparently believed the Brewers were stealing their signs. Marmol said his team “felt like they were being pretty demonstrative about relaying from the dugout” and that he looked over and told them to stop before someone got hurt. The Brewers and Cardinals sit first and second in the NL Central. There’s a genuine rivalry building between these two teams and Tuesday night was the latest escalation.

Abner Uribe also has history.

He was at the center of a bench-clearing brawl with the Rays in 2024. The man is not afraid of confrontation. He’s not afraid of consequences. He struck out three guys, saved the game, and then told the entire Cardinals organization to suck it using nothing but his hips. That’s an athlete who is fully locked in and completely unafraid of the moment.

Marmol said the situation was being blown out of proportion. Of course he did. He’s the guy who got crotch-chopped on national television. Nobody wants to admit that a reliever just DX’d their entire dugout and then refused to apologize for it afterward. That’s an L you can’t spin no matter how hard you try.

Philly Fans Know All About the Crotch Chop

Here in Philadelphia, the DX chop is a regular occurrence. Joel Embiid has been doing it for years when he’s cooking on the court. The NBA has fined him for it multiple times, which is why we typically see the fake chop now where he stops just short of actually doing it. The crowd goes insane every time regardless. It’s become part of the Embiid experience and one of the most recognizable celebrations in the city.

I’ve never seen an MLB pitcher do it though. Definitely not one who stops, turns toward the opposing dugout, and aims it directly at the manager who was allegedly threatening to hit his teammates. That’s a level of disrespect that baseball hasn’t seen in a long time. Baseball culture usually keeps this stuff in-house. You talk behind closed doors. You throw at each other quietly and pretend it was an accident. You don’t stand on the mound and DX the other team’s dugout while 40,000 people watch.

Abner Uribe broke the code and honestly it needed to be broken.

Baseball could use more of this energy. The sport markets itself as fun and exciting and then pearl-clutches every time a player shows actual personality on the field. A pitcher crotch-chopping the opposing dugout after a dominant performance in a rivalry game between two first-place teams is exactly the kind of content that gets people talking about baseball. Let the man celebrate. Let the rivalry breathe. Stop trying to sanitize every competitive moment into a polite handshake.

Abner Uribe apologized to his teammates for creating a distraction. He apologized to fans and Murphy for the optics. He did not apologize to the Cardinals and specifically said their manager’s behavior provoked the response.

That’s a man who understands the difference between accountability and surrender. He acknowledged the celebration was over the top. He took responsibility for the theatrics but he did not back down from the reason behind it.

If Marmol was gesturing toward the Brewers’ dugout about hitting their guys, Uribe’s crotch chop was earned. You don’t threaten to throw at my teammates and then get upset when I respond. That’s not how this works. You started it. He finished it. With his hips.

No apology necessary.
