Cristopher Sanchez had FOUR strikeouts in the first inning, Dominican Republic destroys Nicaragua 12-3

Cristopher Sanchez had the bases loaded with nobody out in the first inning of his World Baseball Classic debut on Saturday night. He responded by striking out four batters on Nicaragua to escape the first inning.

Cristopher Sanchez made his World Baseball Classic debut for the Dominican Republic against Nicaragua at loanDepot Park and did something that has never been done in the 20-year history of the tournament.

He struck out four batters in a single inning. First pitcher ever to do it and the context around that moment makes it even better.

Sanchez got into immediate trouble in the first inning. Nicaragua’s leadoff hitter struck out but reached on a wild pitch. Two singles loaded the bases. A walk made it bases loaded with nobody out and the Nicaraguan fans in Miami were going absolutely insane, genuinely believing they might be watching history of a different kind.

The Dominican pitching coach came out to the mound. Whatever he said to Sanchez worked. Three straight strikeouts to end the inning. The fourth strikeout of the inning came on a check swing call at first base on Omar Mendoza. Sanchez pumped his fist walking off the mound and the Dominican fans responded accordingly.

Cristopher Sánchez after allowing the first four batters to reach base:

The second inning was rougher. Nicaragua hit four of the first five batters he faced and took a 3-2 lead, ending Sanchez’s night after 1.1 innings. His final line was six hits, three runs, one walk, and four strikeouts. Not the outing he wanted.

Sanchez took it in stride.

“I’ll try to get better for the next outing. We’ve turned the page. I try to take the positives and throw away the negatives. The offense backed me up and we were able to win the game, which is what matters.”

The Dominican Republic won 12-3. The bigger story is that a Phillies pitcher just wrote his name into the WBC record books. Cristopher Sanchez is now the first pitcher in the tournament’s history to strike out four in one inning.

Cristopher Sanchez FOUR strikeouts:

Heading into 2026 as the likely Opening Day starter in Philadelphia, coming off a 13-5, 2.50 ERA season, and now a piece of WBC history. The Cristopher Sanchez era in Philadelphia is in full swing.

If both the Dominican Republic and Team USA advance to the semifinals, Bryce Harper will be facing him. Harper already warned everyone about that. He was not wrong.
