MLB just dropped the full All-Star Week schedule, and Philadelphia will be the center of the baseball universe this July
MLB and the Phillies released the full All-Star Week schedule this morning, and Philadelphia is set to host the Midsummer Classic from July 10-14 at Citizens Bank Park. It’s the first time the city has hosted the game since 1996 at Veterans Stadium.

I have to say, while this is a great get for the Fighting City of Philadelphia, it comes at an awkward time, given that the Phillies are currently playing like a middle school JV squad. But let’s shelve that for a moment and appreciate what this actually is.
Philadelphia gets the All-Star Game for the first time in 30 years, as it should, considering this is America’s 250th anniversary. The last time this city hosted, the starting catcher was Mike Piazza, the starting pitcher was John Smoltz, and the American League won 6-0 in front of 62,000 people at The Vet. As much as I love the history of the Vet, it’s safe to say Citizens Bank Park is going to be a much better venue for it.
The week is loaded. Of course, the Home Run Derby on the 13th and the All-Star Game on the 14th are the marquee events of the week, but there is a lot more baseball around the city for fans to enjoy.
The HBCU Swingman Classic is a showcase game featuring players from historically Black colleges and universities. The All-Star Futures Game on July 12 features the top prospects in each organization playing a proper game at Citizens Bank Park.
The MLB Draft at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on July 11 is free and open to the public, and the All-Star Village opens the same day with interactive stuff for fans until the 14th. Plus, we’ve got youth tournaments running all week at FDR Park with a championship game at Penn.
And then there’s the MLBx 3-on-3 tournament on Sunday, the 13th, which has replaced the old celebrity softball game. Thank God. That game was a death march. Thirty-minute games, co-ed competition, actual stakes.
I don’t know exactly who’s playing yet, but I’m already more interested in this than I ever was in watching some C-list celeb jog to first base and milk a standing ovation for catching a pop fly.
The Phillies are 8-13 right now, which is not exactly the vibe you want heading into a summer where the baseball world is going to be watching your city for a week. Ideally, the team figures it out before July, or there won’t be very many Phillies on the NL roster for the hometown fans to cheer for.
But we’ll get there. The city’s going to look great. Citizens Bank Park is going to look great, especially with the new Ghost Energy Deck in all its sponsored glory. And, while fans will be coming from all over, I think this All-Star Game will be distinctly Philadelphia.
