Alex Bump scores in NHL Debut, Flyers beat Penguins in shootout
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins last night 4-3 in shootouts. Alex Bump made his NHL debut and said he was more nervous for the rookie lap than the actual game. Turns out he had nothing to worry about on either front.
Flyers beat Penguins in Shootout:
Alex Bump will make his NHL debut tonight in Pittsburgh
The 22-year-old winger scored in his NHL debut on Saturday night as the Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in a shootout at PPG Paints Arena.
Alex Bump became the first Flyers player to score in his NHL debut since Hayden Hodgson did it on March 24, 2022. Not a bad way to introduce yourself.
Alex Bump: First Game. First Goal.
The game itself was a wild one.
The Flyers trailed three times and tied it three times. Owen Tippett tied it in the first. Bump tied it in the second. Denver Barkey, off a Matvei Michkov pass, tied it again in the third. Dan Vladar made 20 saves and then stopped all three Penguins shooters in the shootout while Trevor Zegras buried the decisive shot in the second round.
Trevor Zegras. Unstoppable.
Pittsburgh was without Sidney Crosby (lower body, sixth straight game missed) and Evgeni Malkin (five-game suspension for slashing Rasmus Dahlin in the face last week). The Penguins have now lost three straight and 14 of 18 games that have gone to overtime.
Their shootout record is a brutal nine losses in their last ten. Coach Dan Muse acknowledged after the game that the anxiety around those situations has become a real problem.
The Flyers are 29-22-11 and have won four of their last five.
They are still chasing the Bruins for the final Wild Card spot but this was the kind of gritty road win that keeps a team in the hunt. It was great to see the young guys get some pucks in net in Pittsburgh.
Bump scored in his debut. Barkey came up clutch. Michkov had the assist on the tying goal. Zegras won it in the shootout. Not too shabby.
