Team USA vs Mexico tonight is the game the World Baseball Classic was made for

Tonight at 8 on FOX. Daikin Park in Houston. Team USA will send Paul Skenes on the mound in front of packed house with both American and Mexican fan bases showing up ready to go. This is the one, folks.

Team USA and Mexico are both 2-0 in Pool B and tonight’s winner takes control of the bracket. Neither team gets eliminated with a loss, but losing puts you in a genuinely uncomfortable spot heading into the Italy finale with the very real threat of an early exit hanging over you. The pressure is real on both sides.

Mexico owns this rivalry and they know it.

The two countries have met four times in WBC history and Mexico is 3-1. In 2023 they beat Team USA 11-5 in pool play behind a two-homer game from Joey Meneses and a monster night from Randy Arozarena.

In 2006, the last game of the second round, Mexico beat the United States 2-1 and knocked them out of the tournament entirely despite a lineup that included Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr., Chipper Jones, and Alex Rodriguez. Team USA’s only win in the rivalry came in pool play in 2006 when Jake Peavy dominated and Chipper Jones went deep.

DeRosa is not pretending this is just another pool play game. “The U.S. has had their hands full with them in this tournament the last couple of installments of it,” he said. “I certainly haven’t forgotten about it.”

Mexico is rolling. They beat Great Britain 8-2 in their opener and then mercy ruled Brazil 16-0 on Sunday, the third-largest margin of victory in WBC history. Arozarena, Alejandro Kirk, Jarren Duran, and Jonathan Aranda are all dangerous. Manny Barreda gets the start on the mound.

Team USA is different this year.

Judge homered in his first WBC at-bat ever. Schwarber crushed a go-ahead shot against Great Britain in the fifth inning and sparked a five-run rally. The lineup top to bottom is as deep as any Team USA has ever had and Paul Skenes, the reigning NL Cy Young winner, is making his first start of the tournament tonight.

Schwarber was on the 2023 team that got beaten up by Mexico in pool play. He called that atmosphere in Arizona the most electric non-Philadelphia stadium he had ever been in. He said it felt like a Phillies postseason game. He has been waiting for this rematch for three years.
