Eagles sign former Pro Bowl Cornerback to a 1-year prove it deal
The Philadelphia Eagles just made a move that should have fans fired up. The Birds are signing former Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl corner Riq Woolen, and if you look at how this defense is built right now, the fit actually makes a ton of sense.
Not only does this give the Eagles another long, athletic outside corner at 6-foot-4, but it also gives the secondary multiple layers of matchup flexibility.
Which we will touch on here, as I can guarantee you all day tomorrow the clowns over at WIP will be talking about the contract all day. Instead of football and the fact that Howie Roseman made a genius move signing a player of the Super Bowl Champs roster.

Former Seahawks Pro-Bowl CB Riq Woolen reached agreement today on a one-year deal worth up to $15 million with the Philadelphia Eagles, per me and Jeremy Fowler. Agent Jason Chayut confirmed the deal. pic.twitter.com/kRiWIdDey7

Let’s start with the most important part of this move. This signing means Woolen can line up opposite Quinyon Mitchell on the outside. And that changes everything.
Mitchell is already the guy who’s going to be tasked with dealing with the opposing team’s top receiver most weeks. That means Woolen won’t have to come into Philadelphia and immediately shadow the best player on the field.
Instead, he gets a cleaner assignment structure, especially with Cooper DeJean in the nickel.
Alright, now for what you really clicked on this for: Riq Woolen’s stats.
Career Totals (64 Games Played)
- Interceptions: 12
- Pass Breakups (PBUs): 53
- Total Tackles: 139
- Solo Tackles: 114
- Tackles for Loss: 3
- Forced Fumbles: 1
- Fumble Recoveries: 1
- Defensive Touchdowns: 1
While it seems his best football is behind him, (rookie season), where he had 6 interceptions, which was tied for the NFL lead. It’s worth noting that while he has been inconsistent since then, he will indeed be playing in a Vic Fangio defense.
Which basically means you have to be deaf, blind, or stupid, to not produce in it. Go Birds.
