Of course FOX Sports social media graphic saying ‘Israel Eliminated’ will only be used for international sporting events
The World Baseball Classic has produced a lot of viral moments over the past week. Aaron Judge homering in his first career WBC at-bat. The Logan Allen vs. Logan Allen standoff. The botched walk-off call. Kyle Schwarber going 427 feet in the fifth inning against Great Britain.
None of them went as viral as a FOX Sports elimination graphic.
After Israel lost to the Dominican Republic on Monday, FOX Sports posted a graphic to social media featuring the Israeli flag and the words “Israel Eliminated” in large font. The caption read: “Israel has been eliminated from WBC title contention after their loss to the Dominican Republic.”
Completely standard sports elimination graphic.
Totally routine. Surely, this will only ever be used for international sporting events.
FOX SPORTS: ISRAEL ELIMINATED
FOX Sports had to know what they were doing, right?
I know they run out the same graphic package for every team eliminated from contention in the World Baseball Classic but for a digital media company, I highly doubt that they could be so clueless about the current state of the world and what’s being talked about online. There had to be some type of internal discussion before posting it, right?
That graphic will be used a million times over and be the main content of a million troll accounts across the internet for years to come.
As expected internet did not treat it as routine. The post has been viewed over 10 million times and received nearly 200,000 likes, making it the most viral post related to the World Baseball Classic, outside of Shohei Ohtani’s grand slam, so far.
Respectfully, Harrison Bader and Garrett Stubbs were not driving that kind of engagement for Israel and their overall play during the tournament was closer to a Little League World Series game rather than baseball’s premiere international tournament.
Social media had an absolute field day with it and the jokes wrote themselves. We will leave those in the comments and quote tweets sections where they belong.
