The DeRosa Files: MLB Network has some explaining to do

Before Team USA lost to Italy on Tuesday night, manager Mark DeRosa sat down with MLB Network’s Hot Stove and said the quiet part out loud.

“We want to win this game, even though our ticket’s punched to the quarterfinals.”

Mark DeRosa thought Team USA already advanced before stunning WBC loss to Italy

Mark DeRosa’s ticket was not punched. In fact, the ticket was very much not punched.

A loss to Italy, which is exactly what happened, would put Team USA in a position where they no longer control their own fate and could potentially be eliminated from the World Baseball Classic in pool play. Mark DeRosa apparently did not know this. He may have made lineup decisions based on the belief that the game was essentially meaningless.

SMOKING GUN: Mark DeRosa started Paul Goldschmidt over Bryce Harper and had Clayton Kershaw warming up on the bullpen. That’s how you know he really thought last night’s game meant absolutely nothing. It’s all the evidence you could possibly need.

After Team USA lost 8-6, the clip went viral immediately. Rightfully so.

Then something interesting happened. MLB Network’s version of the interview quietly disappeared from the league’s website.

Poof. Gone.

The league’s Facebook page then posted a condensed version of the interview that conveniently did not include the part where Mark DeRosa said the team had already clinched.

The Foul Territory podcast called it out on their show Tuesday night.

By Wednesday morning the full interview had reappeared on MLB Network’s website.

Whether it was pulled intentionally or came down for some other reason is technically unknown but the timing is very hard to explain as anything other than someone at MLB Network deciding they did not want Mark DeRosa’s comments sitting out there while Twitter was on fire.

Once that fire spread back to MLB Network, they attempted to correct themselves by putting the clip back up.

Unfortunately, ‘History Will Be Retweeted’ and the internet lives forever.

The damage was already done and now, the United States are facing elimination from the World Baseball Classic, seemingly due to an inept manager who made some boneheaded decisions on the belief that USA was already moving onto the single-elimination round of the tournament.

The result is Team USA sitting in a hotel tonight waiting to find out if Aaron Nola and Italy can save them from elimination. The manager went on national television before the game and said the quarterfinals were already locked up. That is a significant mistake in a tournament where the rules are specific and the margin for error is zero.

Team USA built this roster to compete for a championship. They do not deserve to go out because in part, their manager misread the bracket.

Hopefully Aaron Nola makes sure it does not come to that.
