Eagles reportedly exploring trade for Vikings EDGE Jonathan Greenard
The Eagles are still very much in the market for pass rush help, and a new name has entered the conversation.
According to a report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Eagles are actively discussing a potential trade for Vikings Pro Bowl edge rusher Jonathan Greenard. More importantly, this isn’t just a casual check-in call. Philadelphia has also begun talking with Greenard’s representation about a possible contract extension, which suggests there’s legitimate interest in making something happen.
Minnesota is reportedly open to moving Greenard if a new deal is part of the equation, with the Vikings believed to be seeking a Day 2 draft pick in return.
Eagles Still Searching for Edge Help
The Eagles have clearly made it a priority to add help on the edge this offseason. They’ve already been linked to multiple big-name pass rushers, including Trey Hendrickson and Maxx Crosby, but both pursuits ultimately fell through.
If you watched the Eagles’ defensive line situation unfold last season, you understand why the front office is still hunting.
Philadelphia dealt with a revolving door at the position in 2025. Za’Darius Smith’s midseason retirement forced the team to scramble, Brandon Graham briefly came out of retirement to help stabilize things, and the Eagles ultimately traded for Jaelan Phillips during the season just to keep the pass rush afloat.
There was real momentum toward bringing Phillips back this offseason, but the Panthers blew that idea up with a four-year, $120 million deal. At that price, the Eagles understandably bowed out.
Greenard could represent a more reasonable alternative.
Why Jonathan Greenard Makes Sense for the Eagles
Greenard is coming off a strange two-year stretch that still keeps him firmly on the radar as one of the better pass rushers available.
Back in 2024, he was outstanding in Minnesota, recording 12 sacks and earning a Pro Bowl selection. That came on the heels of a 12.5-sack contract year with the Texans before he hit free agency.
Last season, however, the production dipped. Greenard finished with just three sacks in 12 games, which likely explains why Minnesota is at least entertaining trade conversations.
Even with the drop-off, the talent is still obvious. Greenard turns 29 in May and has already shown he can produce double-digit sacks in the right situation. For an Eagles defensive front that thrives on rotation and pressure depth, that kind of experience could be extremely valuable.
Eagles Pass Rush Still Has Question Marks
The Eagles do have some young pieces at edge rusher, but there’s still plenty of uncertainty.
Nolan Smith, a former first-round pick, hasn’t fully broken out yet. Jalyx Hunt showed flashes last season and actually led the team with 6.5 sacks while generating 24 quarterback hits, but he’s still early in his development.
On top of that, the Eagles lost some depth this week when Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari departed in free agency.
In other words, the need for another proven edge presence is very real.
Why Minnesota Might Move Him
From the Vikings’ perspective, trading Greenard isn’t as crazy as it might sound.
Minnesota still has Andrew Van Ginkel in the starting lineup and 2024 first-round pick Dallas Turner waiting in the wings. Turner had an impressive 2025 season with eight sacks and 15 quarterback hits, and the Vikings may be ready to clear a path for him to take on a larger role.
If they can flip Greenard for a Day 2 draft pick while promoting Turner into the starting lineup, it would make sense from a roster-building standpoint.
A Classic Howie Roseman Move?
If this deal ultimately happens, it would feel very on-brand for the Eagles and general manager Howie Roseman.
Philadelphia already showed last season that they’re willing to trade mid-round picks to stabilize the pass rush when they dealt a third-rounder for Jaelan Phillips. The Eagles also picked up four compensatory selections this year after losing players like Milton Williams and Josh Sweat, which gives them some flexibility to make a move.
Greenard likely won’t command the type of contract Jaelan Phillips just received, which could make this a much more comfortable deal for the Eagles financially.
Nothing is done yet, but the interest is clearly real.
And if there’s one thing we know about the Eagles under Howie Roseman, it’s that when they start making calls about pass rushers, something usually ends up happening sooner rather than later.
