Matt Cord announces retirement after 28 years as the Sixers PA Announcer
Sixers PA Announcer Matt Cord announced Wednesday that the 2025-26 season will be his last as the Philadelphia 76ers’ PA announcer, ending a 28-year run behind the microphone at the Wells Fargo Center. Hired in 1998, Cord has been the voice of more Sixers moments than most people can count.
Thank you, Matt Cord
“After 28 years as the PA announcer for the Sixers I’m officially retiring at the end of the season,” Cord said on X. “I’ve had the best seat in the house announcing for the best fans in the world. Thank you to the players and the 76ers organization. What a privilege it’s been.”
If you have been to a Sixers game at any point in the last three decades you know exactly what that voice sounds like. From his iconic “Allen Iverson” to Joel The Process Embiid” the man had a signature style that was entirely his own, hyping the home heroes with full theater while staying flat for opposing players.
Matt Cord understood the assignment from day one and never stopped delivering it.
Cord has been a Philadelphia institution on multiple fronts. He is the midday host at 93.3 WMMR and has been a constant presence on Philly radio alongside his Sixers work. Starting in 2022 his voice was even featured in NBA 2K, which is how you know a PA announcer has transcended the building and become something bigger.
At 66 he is going out on his own terms and plans to continue his radio work at WMMR. The Sixers called him iconic in their statement, which for once is not an overstatement.
Twenty-eight years. Allen Iverson. The Answer era. The Process. Two eras of Philly basketball completely different from each other and Matt Cord was the voice running through all of it. That is a career worth celebrating.
