Union Fall 1-0 to Club América in Leg 1, Now Must Win in Mexico City
Not the result Philadelphia needed. The Union dropped Leg 1 of their Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 tie 1-0 to Club América on Tuesday night at Subaru Park, and now they head to Mexico City on March 18 down a goal on aggregate with an away goal working against them.
Union Falls Behind in the Concacaf Champions Cup Bracket
Raphael Veiga did the damage in the 20th minute, converting a clinical finish from inside the area past goalkeeper Andrew Rick. It was exactly the kind of road goal Club América came for and they got it early.
Philadelphia’s best shot at an equalizer came in the 86th minute when Indiana Vassilev pounced on a giveaway at the back and had an open look. He skied it. A goal there changes everything heading into Leg 2. Instead they are staring down a trip to Mexico City needing to win.
The aggregate winner advances to the quarterfinals where either Inter Miami or Nashville SC is waiting.
Leg 2 is March 18. The Union are not done but the margin for error just got very thin.
