WATCH: Cristopher Sanchez had a hilarious reaction to a Korean reporter asking him a question at the World Baseball Classic
Cristopher Sanchez stepped up to the World Baseball Classic podium on Thursday and a reporter asked him a question in Korean. Sanchez had absolutely zero idea what was being asked of him and his reaction to the entire exchange was genuinely funny.
Cristopher Sanchez at the World Baseball Classic
That’s good, clean fun right there. Gotta love it. I’m just happy for Cristopher Sanchez being the focal point of the Dominican Republic pitching staff. He deserves the spotlight.
Sanchez will get the start for DR tonight against Korea in Miami at 6:30 PM ET on FS2.
On the other side of the bracket, Team USA faces Canada at 8 PM ET on FOX in Houston, where his teammates Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Brad Keller represent the Americans.
If both Team USA and the DR win tonight, they meet Sunday in Miami for a semifinal that would undoubtedly be must-watch baseball. The good news for Phillies fans is that Sanchez and Harper and Schwarber would not have to face each other since Sanchez would be coming back on one day of rest.
Back to Cristopher Sanchez on the mound...
He has had exactly a week between starts when he takes the ball tonight and he is going to need it. His pool play outing against Nicaragua was rough. Three runs, five singles, a walk, a double, and only four outs recorded.
He did set a WBC record by striking out four batters in a single inning, the first of which reached on a wild pitch, so there is a footnote for the history books. But he was as hittable as he has been in three years and Nicaragua went 0-4 in the tournament.
Maybe it was nerves. Cristopher Sanchez was still pinching himself when he left Phillies camp at the end of February to start Game 1 for his home country under manager Albert Pujols.
That is a moment he earned with one of the best pitching seasons in Phillies history in 2025, finishing with a 2.50 ERA over 202 innings, 212 strikeouts, 44 walks, and 12 home runs allowed. He was the NL Cy Young runner-up to Paul Skenes.
Korea went 2-2 in pool play, beating Czechia and Australia while losing to Japan and Chinese Taipei. They have big leaguers in Jung Hoo Lee, Hyeseong Kim, Jahmai Jones, and Shay Whitcomb. Hyun Jin Ryu, now 38, is on the pitching staff.
The Dominican Republic is heavily favored and rightfully so. There was a significant advantage to landing on this side of the bracket instead of facing Japan.
