Flyers lose 6-4 to the Capitals, remain 2-points back of a Wild Card spot with 8 games remaining
The Flyers fell to the Capitals 6-4 on Tuesday night at Capital One Arena and it stings because of what was available.
A win would have pulled them even with Columbus for the second Wild Card spot with the tiebreaker of fewer games played. Instead they lost and 22 minutes later the Blue Jackets lost to the Hurricanes anyway.
The Flyers did not gain ground but they did not lose any either. The Islanders, Senators, and Red Wings all lost in regulation on Tuesday night.
Still two points back of the second wild card with eight games left.
Travis Sanheim and Carl Grundstrom scored 4:36 into the second period to tie it at 2-2 after the Flyers fell down 2-0 in the first. Then Washington responded with back-to-back power play goals to regain the two-goal lead.
Christian Dvorak and Denver Barkey both found the net in the third to cut the deficit to one twice but the Flyers never took the lead and Dan Vladar was not sharp, allowing five goals on 17 shots before an empty netter closed it out.
Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson each had two goals. It was not a vintage Vladar night and the Flyers had costly penalties from Konecny and Zegras that put them in difficult spots throughout.
For the fifth time this season the Flyers failed to win four games in a row. They have not won more than three straight in over two years.
Porter Martone made his NHL debut on Tuesday night, nine months after going sixth overall in the 2025 draft. The 19-year-old signed his entry-level deal Sunday, skated Monday morning with a small group, and suited up Tuesday night against the Capitals.
He played 16:54, had a team-high five shots including four in the third period, used his size well, and looked positionally sound throughout. He took a stick to the mouth late in the second and came back out for the third without missing a beat.
He had an early penalty for putting the puck over the boards but settled in after that and was one of the more active forwards on the ice. Not bad for a kid who was at Michigan State a week ago.
Zegras picked up an assist to reach 60 points on the season, six away from his career high of 65 set with the Ducks in 2022-23. Sanheim and Dvorak each had a goal and an assist. Konecny had two assists despite the costly penalty.
Two points back. Eight games left. This is still very much alive with the Red Wings coming to Xfinity Mobile Arena on Thursday at 7 PM ET on NBCSP.
