Craig Carton says Dianna Russini has done damage to every woman in sports broadcasting

We covered the Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel situation earlier this week. Some people agreed. Some people called us conspiracy theorists. The usual response when you say something true before the mainstream catches up to it.

Then Craig Carton said it on national radio and suddenly the conversation is legitimate. Funny how that works every single time.

Carton made two points worth highlighting. The first is obvious. The thought is already planted. Every future scoop Russini breaks, every report she drops, every story she runs involving the New England Patriots or any team connected to Mike Vrabel, people are going to ask the question.

Every single time. No statement from The Athletic fixes that. No amount of Steven Ginsberg calling her a premier journalist puts that back in the bottle.

That’s not something you recover from easily. Maybe ever.

The second point is the one that actually matters beyond the Philly angle and the AJ Brown reporting saga. Carton said she has done great damage to other women in broadcasting through no fault of their own.

He is right. Women in sports media already fight an uphill battle every single day just to be taken seriously.

The work they put in, the credibility they build, the professionalism they bring to an industry that has not always made space for them, all of that gets harder every time someone in a prominent position does something like this.

That is genuinely unfair and the person most responsible for it in this situation is Dianna Russini herself.

And while both Russini and Vrabel try to cover this thing up, it’s too late.

The cover-up attempt made it worse. You do not hold hands with a source. You do not sit in a hot tub with a married NFL head coach at a private resort in Sedona and then release a statement asking the public to believe the photos are misleading.

That is not what misleading looks like. That is what caught looks like. Both Russini and Vrabel tried to get ahead of it and it was already too late the moment Page Six published.

The 2015 situation involving Jessica McCloughan’s public accusations about Russini’s relationship with then-Redskins GM Scot McCloughan is also back on people’s minds. McCloughan walked those comments back. But those tweets existed and people remember them and the pattern they suggest does not help Russini’s case right now.

And somewhere in all of this is her husband. An Eagles fan apparently, married to someone who has spent the last year writing false reports pointing his team’s best receiver toward the franchise employing the man she was photographed with at a luxury resort. That is a rough situation for a guy who just wanted to watch his Birds.

Russini still holds the WIP Eagles Insider of the Year award. No traction on any kind of accountability anywhere in the industry. Business as usual. What a joke.
