Cameron Young Rory McIlroy The Masters Sunday Augusta

Cameron Young erased a 6-shot lead on Moving Day and now Sunday at the Masters is now must watch television

Cameron Young opened this Masters with a 40 on his first nine holes on Thursday. Four over through seven. Three straight bogeys starting on the fifth. A round that looked like it might be the end of his tournament before it started. He shot 73, finished T33, and came back Friday with a 67 to get himself back in it.

Then Saturday happened.

Eight birdies, one bogey, a 7-under 65 that matched Scottie Scheffler for the low round of the day and the low round of the entire tournament this week. Cameron Young is now tied with Rory McIlroy at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round. The six-shot lead McIlroy built over the first two rounds, the largest 36-hole cushion in Masters history, is gone.

Cameron Young Birdie on the 16th

Cameron Young has been quietly building something at Augusta for years. He has a T7 in 2023 and a T9 in 2024 and has shown consistently that he understands this course. Last month he won THE PLAYERS Championship for the biggest title of his career.

Now Cameron Young has a chance on Sunday to complete the southeastern double that McIlroy himself pulled off a year ago. Poetically, he will have to go through McIlroy in the final group to do it.

Rory McIlroy comes back to earth in Round 3

McIlroy’s day was a stark contrast to Young’s. A bogey on the first hole set an uneasy tone and it never really recovered. He shot 73. The record lead evaporated by the time he reached the 10th hole. He is still tied for the lead but the aura of inevitability from the first two days is gone.

Scottie Scheffler and the rest of the field

Scottie Scheffler turned in a 7-under 65 of his own and is right back in it. He went out in 31 with an eagle on the second and three straight birdies from seven through nine. Two more birdies on the back put him firmly in contention heading into Sunday. Scheffler has won here twice. He does not need to be reminded how to win on this golf course.

Shane Lowry is at 9-under after shooting 68 and has gotten progressively better every single day, going 70-69-68. He also holed his tee shot on the sixth for the only ace of the week.

Sam Burns is one shot back at 11-under after a bogey-free 68 and will be in the penultimate group on Sunday. Burns entered the week at plus-10000 to win. He is now one shot off the lead.

Haotong Li is the wild card. The Chinese star nearly withdrew Friday with stomach problems and claims he was living in the bathroom. He shot 69 on Saturday and sits at 7-under, squarely in contention.

Jason Day is at 8-under after birdieing all four par fives on Saturday. Russell Henley shot a bogey-free 66. Patrick Cantlay has gone bogey-free for the last two rounds and is at 5-under.

The Sunday Setup

Cameron Young and Rory McIlroy in the final group at Augusta National.

Both at 11-under. Scheffler lurking three back. Lowry and Burns one back. A leaderboard full of players who can win a major championship.

No lead is safe at Augusta and Sunday is going to be exactly the kind of chaos this tournament was built for.
