Zach Ertz

Zach Ertz never wanted to leave the Eagles and he finally made that crystal clear

Zach Ertz just cleared up one of the biggest misconceptions from the back end of his Eagles run.

For years, some fans assumed Ertz wanted out of Philadelphia when things started shifting toward Dallas Goedert. That apparently was never the case. Ertz told Jeff McLane of The Inquirer, “I think there’s a little misconception that I wanted to leave. I never wanted to leave.”

That should matter to Eagles fans, because it completely changes how some people looked at the end of his time here. This was not a guy forcing his way out. This was a franchise making a long-term football decision.

Zach Ertz set the record straight on his Eagles exit

Ertz did not dance around it either.

“I said 1,000 times to Howie I did not want to leave,” Ertz said.

That is about as direct as it gets. He made it clear he wanted to stay in Philadelphia, but the Eagles had already drafted Goedert and saw him as the better long-term play at tight end. That is the business. It happens. But for Ertz, this was never about wanting a fresh start somewhere else.

That is the part fans needed to hear.

For a long time, the way his exit played out left room for people to make assumptions. Now there really is not much to debate. Zach Ertz wanted to remain an Eagle. The Eagles just chose to move in a different direction.

A Zach Ertz return feels unlikely, but the door to closure is still there

This does not mean a real reunion is coming.

The Eagles already brought Dallas Goedert back, and the tight end room has bodies in it. There is not exactly some obvious opening for Ertz to step in and grab a roster spot. From a pure football standpoint, it feels like a long shot.

But that is different from saying there is no path at all for him to finish where he belongs.

Whether it is a late-career depth role, a camp look, or just a one-day contract when he is ready to call it quits, Zach Ertz retiring as an Eagle feels like something that should happen. The man is one of the most important players in franchise history. He caught the go-ahead touchdown in the biggest game this team has ever played. That alone puts him on the short list of Eagles legends forever.

And if he ever did come back for even a brief run, there is a little extra juice there too. He is close to the franchise receptions record. That would be a pretty fitting way to put a bow on his career.

At the very least, Eagles fans now know the truth. Zach Ertz did not want out. He did not quit on Philly. He wanted to stay, and the team made a choice.

That does not erase how things ended, but it does make it a lot easier to appreciate what he was here and why so many people would love to see him come back one last time.
