Brinks truck Philadelphia robbery

Two men with assault rifles robbed a Brinks truck in Northeast Philadelphia and walked off with up to $1.8 million

Two men armed with assault rifles robbed a Brinks truck in broad daylight Tuesday morning in the Tacony section of Northeast Philadelphia, fleeing with what police sources say could be up to $1.8 million in cash. No one was injured, no one is in custody, and the FBI has taken over the investigation.

Normal Tuesday up in Tacony, I reckon.

The Brinks truck was parked on Torresdale Avenue when two guys just walked up with assault rifles and took what they needed:

Oh hell yes. There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned armored car robbery. And I’ve got to commend them on the efficiency of the operation. This could have easily turned into the armored van scene from Heat, and nobody wants that.

The truck was servicing a Budget Financial Center at the Torresdale bus loop when the two men made their move. The getaway car, a blue Acura SUV, was found dumped near Front Street and Fairmount Avenue in Northern Liberties, which means these two either had another car waiting or they’re currently sprinting somewhere in North Philly right now.

Here’s the thing about this city and armored car robberies: this isn’t even a particularly shocking headline anymore. Last summer, three men, including a recently fired Brinks employee, were charged with jacking a Brinks truck behind a Home Depot in Port Richmond and walking off with about $2 million.

That same month, another crew grabbed $700,000 from a Brinks truck outside an H Mart in Cheltenham Township. In October, two more guys were indicted for Brinks robberies in Elkins Park and on Castor Avenue. Philly loves an armored car heist; it must be in our DNA.

At some point, you have to wonder if Brinks is running a training program for this. And, on an unrelated note, does anyone know if they’re hiring?

The FBI is involved now, which either means they’ll crack this thing in 48 hours or we’ll see a wanted poster with grainy security footage in about two weeks. I’d wager on the latter. Granted, Kash Patel is on one of his benders right now, so we may never hear about this story again. Such are the mysterious ways of the Bureau in modernity.

This is a developing story. We’ll update as more comes in.

Very real and legitimate journalist. I don't see a loss on the schedule.

  1. The FBI track record with finding wanted people is not the best right now. Nancy, last I checked is still missing. These guys picked the right time to take their chances with the FBI.
