Jalen Hurts speaks on AJ Brown situation as Brown no-shows Eagles OTAs
Jalen Hurts spoke to reporters at Eagles OTAs on Wednesday, and of course, the AJ Brown situation came up. It was always going to.
Brown was not there. The trade rumors are still floating around. The Patriots keep being mentioned. June 1 is right around the corner. So Jalen Hurts was asked what it would mean if Brown was traded, and he handled it about as well as he could have.
Hurts took a perfectly timed sip of water right as the question came in and joked, “Picked the right question to sip on, huh?” At least he knows. Then he gave the real answer.
“For us, we’re only focused on learning the offense. It really doesn’t change in terms of our approach to improve. There’s an ‘if’ — obviously it’s been a lingering thing, but nothing can replace all of the greatness that we achieved together.”
That is the answer of a guy who understands exactly what is going on but has no interest in feeding it. Jalen Hurts did not take a shot. He did not act annoyed. He did not pretend the situation has not been hanging over the team. He acknowledged it, gave Brown credit for everything they accomplished together, and went right back to talking about the offense. That has pretty much been the story here. Hurts keeps acting normal while AJ Brown keeps making everything weird.
Jalen Hurts Says His Relationship With AJ Brown Is “Really Good”
The personal side of this is what everyone wants to turn into a soap opera. Jalen Hurts and Brown go way back. Hurts hosted Brown on a recruiting visit to Alabama. Hurts is the godfather to Brown’s daughter. This was never just some random quarterback-wide receiver relationship. That is why all of this feels so awkward. Brandon Graham already cracked the door open two years ago when he suggested the relationship was not great. Reports have followed. Trade rumors have followed. Brown has been frustrated with the passing offense, and some of that frustration has reportedly been directed at Hurts.
Then Brown got married, and based on the photos that came out, Jalen Hurts was not there. So naturally, Hurts was asked about that too. His answer was simple. “Nothing’s changed. … We’re really good.” He also said, “I saw how beautiful the pictures came out at his wedding. I’m very happy for him and his wife and his family. It’s a beautiful thing to step into convenance so I was very excited and congratulatory towards that.”
Again, what else is he supposed to say? Jalen Hurts congratulated the man. He said they are good. He said nothing changed. He praised what they built together. He did not let the media drag him into a public therapy session. At some point, this starts looking like a one-sided issue. Brown is the one absent from OTAs. Brown is the one tied to trade rumors. Brown is the one who has been publicly frustrated. Brown is the one everyone keeps trying to decode.
AJ Brown is an elite receiver. Nobody serious is arguing against that. The Eagles are better with him on the field. Jalen Hurts is better with him on the field. The entire offense is more dangerous with him on the field. But every offseason cannot become emotional homework. Every quiet period cannot turn into cryptic posts, trade reports, wedding attendance discourse, and everyone pretending this is normal.
The Eagles are trying to install a new offense under Sean Mannion. Jalen Hurts is learning a new system. The team is trying to move away from whatever the hell last year was. There is actual football work being done. Instead, Hurts is still standing there answering questions about AJ Brown while Brown is nowhere to be found. That gets old fast.
Jalen Hurts Is Moving Forward, So AJ Brown Should Too
If Brown wants to be here, be here. Right now, Hurts is the one taking the high road. He is the one saying the relationship is fine. He is the one giving Brown respect. He is the one saying nothing can replace what they achieved together.
The Eagles are also not stupid. They drafted Makai Lemon. They traded for Dontayvion Wicks. They signed Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore. They still have DeVonta Smith. They still have Dallas Goedert. They still have Saquon Barkley. Losing AJ Brown would hurt, obviously, but the team has already started preparing for the possibility.
Saquon Barkley put it pretty plainly.
“I’m a big fan of A.J. Brown. One of my really good friends, one of my favorite teammates I’ve ever been around. Just respect him as a man. But this is a business. It’s the NFL. If I’m not here, Jalen’s not here, whoever’s not here, the show goes on.”
That is where this whole thing is now. The show goes on. Jalen Hurts is learning the offense. The Eagles are preparing for whatever comes next. AJ Brown needs to figure out what he wants, because Hurts already gave his answer. He is good. He is focused. He is moving forward. Now it is on AJ to do the same.
