Why the Eagles Traded AJ Brown: Howie Roseman Explains the Deal

The Eagles traded star wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots on Monday, and general manager Howie Roseman spent his post-trade press conference laying out exactly why he pulled the trigger. The short version: he got the draft capital he wanted, the timing worked in his favor, and the player wanted a change of scenery.

In return for Brown, Philadelphia received a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Roseman spoke to reporters roughly 45 minutes after the deal became official.

The First-Round Pick Was Non-Negotiable

Roseman made clear that the trade only happened because the Eagles secured a first-round pick. “We wouldn’t have done this trade if there wasn’t a first-round pick plus included,” he said, describing the outcome as a “win-win for both sides.”

Notably, he didn’t mind that the pick is two drafts away — and may have even preferred it. Had the Eagles taken New England’s 2026 first-rounder, it would have been No. 31 overall, the last pick of the round. A 2028 pick carries the chance of landing higher. “A pick is a pick — a first-round pick is a first-round pick,” Roseman said. “Teams are still going to be playing football in 2028.” He pointed to the value of holding two first-round picks in that 2028 draft as a key part of the move.

The June 1 Timing Was Deliberate

The calendar mattered. Roseman waited until after June 1 to finalize the trade so that Brown’s dead money could be spread across two salary-cap years rather than absorbed all at once. That decision freed up cap space and cash the Eagles can now redirect toward other players, including young pieces approaching contract extensions.

Brown Wanted a Fresh Start

According to Roseman, the Eagles weren’t actively shopping Brown. The conversations developed after the season, when Brown expressed a desire to move on for his family’s sake at this stage of his career. Roseman said Brown remained positive about his time in Philadelphia throughout. Trade speculation around Brown had circulated even before last season’s deadline.

Replacing a Star Receiver

Roseman acknowledged that no single player replaces Brown, saying the loss “will have to be picked up by more than just one player.” He pointed to a group effort: DeVonta Smith, whom he praised as “a really, really, really good player”; 2026 first-round pick Makai Lemon; a trade for Dontayvion Wicks; and the signing of Hollywood Brown.

For context, it took the Eagles seven years to field a 1,000-yard receiver before acquiring Brown, whom they had signed to a contract extension in 2024.
