Josh Sweat Eagles rumors

Josh Sweat to the Eagles is a fun rumor with a $76.4 million asterisk

Josh Sweat reportedly wants out of Arizona, and before the report finished loading, half of Philadelphia had already mapped the parade route down Broad Street.

I understand the impulse. He was ours. He rushed the passer for us. He has a ring partly because of a four-game stretch in midnight green. The reunion writes itself.

So let me be the guy who reads past the headline.

Josh Sweat wants out of Arizona, and Philly heard exactly what it wanted to hear

Here’s the actual reporting. Josh Sweat is holding out, his name is on the block, and a couple of teams already took their swing and got hung up on. The Cowboys called. The Buccaneers called. Arizona said no to both. And the team being whispered loudest isn’t the Eagles, it’s the Green Bay Packers, mostly because Jonathan Gannon is now Green Bay’s defensive coordinator, and Gannon was Sweat’s defensive coordinator back in Philadelphia.

The Eagles part? One line, in one report, saying Josh Sweat has his eyes on Green Bay and his old team. That’s the entire foundation we’ve built the homecoming on.

And even the Packers version got iced. The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman reported that Green Bay’s GM hasn’t discussed a Sweat trade with a single soul. The hottest take in this whole saga is a guy reporting that the saga isn’t real yet.

Cool. Love that for us.

The part nobody in the group chat wants to say out loud

Philly keeps skipping the obvious thing. The Eagles already had Josh Sweat. Seven seasons. 104 games. 43 sacks. A fourth-round flier in 2018 that turned into one of the better pass-rush developments this front office has pulled off in years.

Then they let him walk.

He hit free agency after the Super Bowl, signed a four-year, $76.4 million deal with Arizona, went out and posted a career-high 12 sacks in his first year there, and now the dream is to surrender draft capital to bring back the guy we already declined to keep?

I’m not saying it can’t happen. This front office has done weirder things before lunch, it shipped out AJ Brown for picks on June 1 and barely blinked. If anyone’s going to reacquire a 29-year-old edge rusher on a $76 million contract he watched leave for nothing, it’s the people running this team.

But let’s call it what it is. This isn’t a deal. It’s a feeling. It’s a fan base seeing a familiar name in a trade rumor and deciding, against all available evidence, that the universe owes us one.

And maybe it does. The defensive line could use it. Sweat is still good. And if Schneidman’s right that Green Bay isn’t actually in this, the door reopens for everybody, Philly included.

But right now, today, the Josh Sweat reunion is held together by one sentence and a whole lot of wishful thinking.

So enjoy the rumor. Just don’t spend the picks yet.

He left once. He got paid. He got his career year. And the only people currently swearing the Eagles are in on this are the ones who’d love it most.
