Nobody Asked: A 94.1 WIP host named Kyle Quinn says Sixers fans should be embarrassed for courting LeBron James and that he’s a ‘certified hater’
Kyle Quinn, the WIP host I wrote about last August for suggesting that Phillies fans should boo the team after a bad series against the Mets in New York, is back on the radio with his overly annoying voice telling Philadelphia that everyone should be embarrassed about the Sixers courting LeBron James because he’s a “certified LeBron hater” as if anyone on the planet asked for that information or cared about it in the first place.
Kyle Quinn went on the air and declared himself a certified hater of a player who has four championships, four Finals MVPs, four regular season MVPs, 22 All-Star selections, and is universally regarded as either the greatest or second-greatest basketball player who has ever lived, and he said it with the confidence of someone who thinks being a contrarian about the most accomplished athlete in NBA history is a personality trait rather than a cry for attention from a radio host that nobody outside of WIP’s rapidly shrinking listener base has ever heard of.
94.1 WIP Kyle Quinn, everybody lol
Does Kyle Quinn watch Sixers basketball?
Honest question because the Sixers haven’t won a championship in over 40 years, haven’t been to the Finals since 2001, got swept in the second round by the Knicks this past season, and are now in a position where the greatest player in the history of the sport is actively considering signing with the franchise after Maxey, Embiid, and Brown have all been personally recruiting him.
The Sixers’ fanbase has suffered through the Process, the Simmons saga, the Morey era that produced zero Conference Finals appearances, and years of watching Embiid’s prime get wasted by front offices that couldn’t build a roster good enough to get past the second round.
Now that the franchise finally has a realistic shot at adding LeBron James to a core of Embiid, Maxey, Brown, Edgecombe, and Philon, some nobody on WIP is telling the audience they should be embarrassed about the courting process because he’s a “certified hater” of the one player who could actually push this franchise over the top.
What is a “Certified LeBron James Hater” anyways?
Why would anyone admit that on radio?
What does “certified LeBron hater” even mean? Is there a licensing board for being irrationally opposed to the greatest basketball player of all time joining your city’s team that hasn’t won a championship since Ronald Reagan was in his first term?
The phrase is meaningless and the fact that Kyle Quinn said it like it was a credential rather than an admission of stupidity tells you everything about the culture at 94.1 WIP where having the dumbest possible take on any given sports topic is treated as a badge of honor rather than a reason to be removed from the airwaves.
Of course we don’t get the full context of Quinn’s comments because all we see is the small, edited clip that WIP loves to push out on social media with zero context surrounding the statement because the station doesn’t give a shit about providing nuanced sports analysis when a decontextualized hot take generates more engagement in the replies even though that engagement is almost entirely people telling the station how terrible the take is.
WIP’s social media engagement is trash, the replies are full of people ripping the hosts and the station on a daily basis, and the operation just keeps churning out content designed to make people angry because the Spike Eskin model of rage-bait radio is apparently the only programming strategy anyone at that station knows how to execute.
Kyle Quinn is a WIP and Spike Eskin wannabe, a hot-take tryhard who is attempting to make a name for himself on radio by saying the dumbest shit imaginable in the loudest voice possible because that’s the career path that WIP has laid out for its younger hosts who watched Eskin build a following through manufactured controversy and decided to copy the formula without understanding that the formula doesn’t actually produce respect or credibility but rather a loyal audience of people who tune in specifically because they enjoy being angry about sports.
Kyle Quinn is doing the same thing Eskin does, which is taking the most positive development in Philadelphia sports and finding the one angle that turns it into a negative, except Quinn doesn’t even have Eskin’s tenure or name recognition to fall back on and is essentially just a random guy with a microphone saying things that nobody asked him to say about a player that every rational Sixers fan would welcome with open arms.
Don’t Say “We” When Talking About the Sixers Either
I definitely don’t want Kyle Quinn saying “we” when speaking about the Sixers because a person who identifies as a “certified LeBron hater” while the franchise is trying to land LeBron James is not part of the “we” that the Sixers’ fanbase represents.
The “we” in Sixers basketball is the fanbase that has been suffering for 40-plus years without a championship, that has watched every promising roster fall apart in the second round, that has invested emotional energy into this franchise season after season knowing that the payoff might never come, and that is now watching the most realistic chance at a championship in decades unfold in real time as the greatest player in history considers joining the team.
That “we” wants LeBron James in a Sixers uniform. Kyle Quinn apparently does not, which means Kyle Quinn is not part of the “we” and should stop using the word when discussing a franchise whose fans overwhelmingly want the exact thing he’s telling them to be embarrassed about wanting.
The same goes for pretty much everyone at WIP and whatever little groups they’ve assembled on “Sixers Twitter” who spend more time debating whether the Sixers should want LeBron James than actually rooting for the franchise to acquire the one player who could transform the organization overnight.
These people would rather be right about their LeBron hatred than see the Sixers win a championship with his help because the hot take is more important to them than the outcome, and a Sixers championship with LeBron leading the way would invalidate every negative thing they’ve said about the acquisition, which is a possibility they can’t stomach because being wrong publicly is the one thing that WIP hosts and their satellite accounts on social media fear more than anything else in the world.
LeBron James in Philadelphia Makes Perfect Sense
The Sixers are trying to win an NBA Finals for the first time in over 40 years and LeBron James brings championship caliber to a roster and an organization that simply cannot win the whole thing without adding one more piece that elevates the group from talented to transcendent.
Maxey, Embiid, Brown, Edgecombe, Simons, and Philon give the Sixers a core that can compete in the Eastern Conference, but the difference between competing and winning is the gap that LeBron’s basketball IQ, leadership, and gravitational pull on every possession would fill in a way that no other available player in the sport can replicate.
LeBron James in Philly makes sense from every angle because the roster is constructed to support him, the fanbase would embrace him with the kind of intensity that only Philadelphia provides, the franchise hasn’t won a championship in four decades and delivering one would cement his legacy in a way that another ring in Miami or Cleveland or Los Angeles never could.
The city itself is the best sports town in America where athletes who win championships become legends who are celebrated for the rest of their lives the way Saquon Barkley has been celebrated since winning Super Bowl LIX in his first Eagles season.
Rich Paul said “everything changed” about the Sixers. Myers said “if it’s about winning, let’s talk about this team.” Gansey said “we’d obviously love to have LeBron, in my opinion he’s the best player of all time.”
Maxey, Embiid, and Brown are all actively recruiting him. Barkley pitched him at a football camp. Trout pitched him at All-Star Media Day. The entire city of Philadelphia is aligned behind the idea of LeBron James wearing a Sixers uniform and the only people who disagree are “certified haters” on a radio station that has made a career out of being wrong about everything.
Quinn can be a certified LeBron hater all he wants from behind his WIP microphone because the rest of us are going to keep pushing for the acquisition that would change the trajectory of the Sixers franchise and give Philadelphia its first NBA championship since 1983.
The courting process isn’t embarrassing. Being a “certified hater” of winning is embarrassing, and Kyle Quinn should be embarrassed that he went on the radio and told a championship-starved fanbase that they should feel shame for wanting the greatest basketball player who ever lived to join their team.
LeBron to Philly. The city wants it. The players want it. The front office wants it. WIP doesn’t want it because WIP doesn’t want anything that makes Philadelphia sports fans happy.
Same as it ever was.
