Kai Wagner is coming back to the Philadelphia Union.

The three-time MLS All-Star and the club’s all-time assist leader lasted seven months in England with Birmingham City before the whole experiment ran its course and everyone involved decided it was time to come home.

Kai Wagner made 18 appearances in the EFL Championship with three assists and one FA Cup goal against Cambridge United, which is fine for a half-season audition in English football but isn’t remotely close to the kind of production he was putting up in Philadelphia where he spent seven seasons as the most important defender in the organization’s history.

The Union announced the deal on Thursday with Wagner returning as a designated player guaranteed through the 2028-2029 season with an option for 2029-2030.

This isn’t a rental or a short-term patch but a genuine multi-year commitment to a player the organization clearly never wanted to lose in the first place and moved quickly to bring back the moment the opportunity presented itself.

To get the deal done the Union acquired the top spot in the waiver order from Sporting Kansas City by trading a 2026 international roster spot, the 22nd position in the waiver order, and $100,000 in General Allocation Money, which is a small price to pay for a player who holds the club’s assist record from the left back position.

Kai Wagner made 204 regular-season appearances during his first seven seasons with the Union, totaling eight goals and a club-record 63 assists from the left back position.

His 2025 season was the best of his career with a team-high 2,769 minutes, 90 key passes, 160 corner kicks, 88 successful crosses, two goals, and 11 assists while leading a defense that allowed an MLS-low 35 goals with 14 clean sheets and helped the Union win their second Supporters’ Shield.

He anchored the backline for two Shield-winning teams and made six playoff appearances including an MLS Cup Final, and the defensive structure that produced the best goals-against record in the league was built around his ability to play both sides of the ball at an elite level simultaneously.

The fact that Kai Wagner came back after just seven months tells you the grass wasn’t greener on the other side of the Atlantic. A player who was the best left back in MLS and a three-time All-Star left for England expecting to compete at a higher level and instead found himself in the Championship on a team that wasn’t giving him the role or the results he’d grown accustomed to in Philadelphia.

Sometimes you have to leave to realize what you had and Wagner realized it quickly enough that the Union were able to bring him back before the summer window closed.

The Union return to regular-season action on Wednesday July 22 when they host Red Bull New York for Rivalry Night at Subaru Park with kickoff at 7:30 PM on Apple TV.

Having Kai Wagner available for the New York match would be the kind of immediate impact addition that changes the energy around the club because the fans at Subaru Park know exactly what he brings and the reception he’s going to get when he walks onto that field in a Union jersey again is going to be something special.
