LeBron James Odds Update: 76ers slip to fourth as decision nears
LeBron James is getting close to a decision, and the Sixers’ odds just took a hit.
Updated numbers from Underdog Fantasy put Philadelphia at a 13% implied probability of landing LeBron James, fourth in the market behind Miami at 35%, Cleveland at 29%, and Golden State at 17%. The Warriors passing the Sixers is the new development here, and it has nothing to do with basketball.
Where the LeBron James race stands
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported Friday from Fanatics Fest that LeBron James is “truly getting much closer to a decision,” and that conversations around the league over the last 24 hours point toward an Eastern Conference team winning the sweepstakes. He named Miami and Cleveland as the two teams with the most momentum.
The Sixers were not mentioned as a frontrunner. They also were not eliminated. That’s the thread Philly is hanging onto right now.
McMenamin said the announcement could come as early as Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday. So this is it. The final stretch.
Why Golden State jumped the Sixers
The Warriors’ move up the board is about family, not fit. James has been open about how much weight his family carries in this decision, he told Rich Kleiman at CNBC and Boardroom’s Game Plan event that he spoke privately with his youngest daughter, Zhuri, before his Lakers exit went public, and that she’s been “pulling the weight a lot” in the family conversations.
Golden State can offer something Philadelphia can’t: a short flight to the LA home where Savannah and the kids have spent the last eight years. Andscape’s Marc J. Spears pointed to Chris Paul’s season with the Warriors as the blueprint, commute back and forth, keep the family planted.
Philly is a cross-country move. There’s no spinning that.
The Sixers’ case is still the roster
The basketball pitch remains as strong as anyone’s. Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown have all been directly involved in recruiting James, and the supporting cast, VJ Edgecombe coming off a strong rookie year, offseason addition Anfernee Simons, means James wouldn’t have to carry anything.
The problem is the two teams ahead of Philly in the basketball conversation are in the East, and the team behind them in that conversation has the geography card. The Sixers need one more push, and they need it before the weekend’s over.
We’ll know soon enough.
