Rich Paul just told everyone to shut up and that’s actually good news for the Sixers

Rich Paul went on his podcast Monday night and confirmed what I’ve been screaming into the void for three weeks: nobody knows anything about LeBron James‘ free agency, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Yes, we’ve covered almost every LeBron “update” under the sun. Doesn’t mean we co-sign it, we just think it’s interesting to discuss. And contrary to what the Twitter Mob will say in the replies, they’re here for it too.

“These people don’t know anything,” Rich Paul said. “I don’t know when his choice is going to be made, but it could be 48 seconds. It could be 48 minutes.”

That’s LeBron’s agent. His best friend. The guy who told the Lakers to kick rocks three weeks ago. If he doesn’t know, the burner account with the Cavs logo posting “hearing PHI is out” at 1 a.m. definitely doesn’t know.

The full quote matters here. Teams have been calling Rich Paul asking if there’s anything more they should be doing to land LeBron. His answer was no. “We don’t need you to go above and beyond about anything. We understand it. It’s clear. All the messages have been sent.”

Read that again with Sixers goggles on. The recruitment phase is over. There is no pitch left to botch. Nobody in the Sixers front office can screw this up in the next two weeks, because the work is already done and sitting on LeBron’s desk. Either the message landed or it didn’t.

For a franchise that has spent a decade turning layups into turnovers, that is genuinely comforting. The one thing this organization cannot do right now is trip over its own feet, because Rich Paul just took their feet out of the equation entirely.

Even Adam Silver tried to hurry this along, publicly said he’d like LeBron to announce already so the league can finish building the schedule. The Sixers are one of three teams standing at the front of the line for a 41-year-old four-time champion who has said, flat out, that he wants to compete for a title and find a culture he can uplift.

Now, is “culture he can uplift” a sentence that makes me nervous when Josh Harris is the guy signing the checks? Of course it does. I’ve written thousands of words about that man’s pamphlet-reading press conferences. He knows it. I know it. The city knows it.

But Maxey is here. The pitch is in. And LeBron kept us on the shortlist anyway.

Three weeks of silence isn’t rejection. It’s a 41-year-old man making the last big decision of his career on his own clock, while his agent tells the entire NBA media ecosystem to sit down and stop guessing.
