Kevin Durant says the LeBron-led Sixers remind him of his Warriors teams

Kevin Durant looked at the new-look Sixers this weekend and reached for the highest compliment he has: his own Warriors teams.

Speaking at a USA Basketball charity event in Southern California on Saturday, Kevin Durant said LeBron James and the 76ers have the offensive firepower to compete for the 2027 championship, and he compared the roster to the Golden State squads he won two titles with alongside Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.

“The last time they put three 20-point scorers on a team, they said it was unfair, which was the [Warriors] team I was on,” Kevin Durant said. “[The 76ers] have got four 25-point scorers on this team. So, hell yeah, I think they’re going to be a contender. They’re going to be a fun team to watch. It’s going to be League Pass-worthy.”

The math checks out. Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey all averaged at least 25 points per game last season. LeBron has averaged 25 or more in 20 of his 23 seasons.

Durant said he had zero heads-up before LeBron announced on July 24 that he was signing with the Sixers over the Warriors, Cavs, and Heat.

“I didn’t know at all,” Durant said. “LeBron is stealth like that. I know there’s a lot of noise around him, but you never know what’s on his mind. I’m happy for him. It’s a great decision for him to go to a team that has a good chance to win. Philly is a great fanbase, a great market, and it’s great for the league. There were so many eyes that were tuned in to his decision.”

LeBron, 41, signed a two-year, $8 million deal after the Sixers acquired Brown from Boston. He’s chasing a championship with a fourth different franchise, which no player has ever done.

Where the Sixers stand now

Oddsmakers currently have the Sixers as one of the top title contenders, trailing only the Thunder and Spurs. The franchise is chasing its first championship since 1983.

Durant, meanwhile, said he wants to play in the 2028 LA Olympics at age 39, which would give him a shot at becoming the first men’s basketball player with five golds.
