Joel Embiid

Joel Embiid is in the best shape of his life and the NBA should be terrified

Joel Embiid is skinny. Like, actually skinny. The man posted workout photos this week and looked like someone photoshopped 2019 onto his frame.

I’ve been hurt before. We all have. Every August there’s a report that Joel is “in the best shape of his career,” and every February he’s in a walking boot while we all stare at the ceiling questioning our life choices.

This time feels different. And I have receipts.

Joel Embiid has no restrictions, per Mike Gansey

Mike Gansey went on 97.5 The Fanatic and said the words Philadelphia has waited three years to hear: Joel Embiid is fully healthy with no restrictions. First offseason in forever where he isn’t rehabbing something. Gansey says he’s in the weight room five days a week, trimmed down, motivated, ready.

He also said the quiet part out loud: with LeBron James and Jaylen Brown in the building, Joel Embiid doesn’t have to carry the whole operation anymore. They can manage his minutes, map out the back-to-backs, and save the beast for the games that matter.

That’s the whole ballgame. For years, the Sixers‘ season was a coin flip on one man’s knees. Now the roster has enough firepower that Joel can play 28 minutes in November and nobody panics.

Then the photos dropped. Lean. Athletic. No knee brace. Even LeBron reposted them with “Trust The Process!” which is just simple unbelievable, really. LeBron being a part of The Process always felt like a pipe dream, still doesn’t feel like it’s actually a thing. What a world.

The Joel Embiid window is right now

Let’s be honest about what he’s coming off, because pretending otherwise is how you get hurt again. Embiid hasn’t cleared 40 games since the MVP season. He wore down at the end of the Boston series. His last three years have been a medical drama with occasional basketball.

That’s the risk. It never fully goes away.

But the ceiling? Gansey called him arguably the most talented big man to ever touch a basketball, and the annoying part is he might be right. A healthy Embiid next to LeBron, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe isn’t a playoff team. It’s a problem for the entire league.

He doesn’t need to be an MVP anymore. He needs to be available in May. Everything about this offseason, the body, the lifting, the no-brace photos, the actual visible motivation, says he understands that.

Joel, if you’re reading this: stay off the trampolines, skip the pickup games, and meet us in June.

The Process has one more chapter left.
