Lane Johnson endorses his eventual replacement, says he’s one of the best rookies he’s ever seen
Lane Johnson isn’t hiding from the retirement talk anymore. He’s said flat out he’s strongly considering walking away after this season, and for a fan base that’s watched him anchor the offensive line for over a decade, that’s not an easy thing to hear.
So Johnson did something about the panic. Unprompted, he gave Markel Bell the kind of scouting report you don’t hand out to just anybody.
“He’s one of the best rookies I’ve been around just as far as being in the playbook. No complaining. I haven’t heard him complain one time. And he’s always asking questions,” Lane Johnson said. “So just a really mature young man, handles stuff off the field well… and yeah, man, I see a guy with that size and that ability and that wingspan and movement, he can have a lot of success in this business.”
Lane Johnson’s endorsement comes with actual film to back it up
This isn’t Johnson being nice for the cameras. Bell has been the story of camp all summer, holding down right tackle under Chris Kuper’s coaching while Johnson has been away on a non-injury absence. At 6’9″, 346 pounds out of Miami, Bell has the frame Johnson is talking about, and he’s getting real reps against a starting-caliber defense, not scout-team work.
That matters. Johnson isn’t just praising size and potential. He’s watched Bell operate for months and is still handing him the compliment in real time.
The Eagles have done this before
If the name Jordan Mailata means anything to you, this should sound familiar. The Eagles took a developmental tackle, let him sit behind Jason Peters, and eventually watched him become one of the best left tackles in football. Bell getting a year behind Johnson, with a shot at situational snaps as a sixth lineman, is the same blueprint.
Nobody’s replacing Lane Johnson easily. He’s a Hall of Fame-caliber right tackle and there’s no version of this where Bell steps in Week 1 of 2027 and it feels the same. But if Johnson’s own words mean anything, the cupboard isn’t empty. The Eagles might actually have this figured out before Johnson even walks out the door.
