76ers jersey rumors are swirling and losing the black throwbacks would be the dumbest outcome possible

76ers jersey talk has picked up fast this offseason, and for an obvious reason: this team has LeBron James and Jaylen Brown now, more national eyeballs than it’s had in a decade, and a jersey rotation that’s suddenly a real conversation instead of background noise.

None of what’s out there is official. Every report traces back to the NBA Uniform Tracker account and the outlets running with it. The 76ers haven’t confirmed a single piece of this. Keep that in mind for everything below.

The Sixers will not be wearing their iconic black uniforms from the Allen Iverson era next season.

Here’s what’s floating. The cream 2017-18 City Edition jerseys are reportedly coming back. Nobody asked for that. Those jerseys belong to the Ben Simmons era. Only bring them back if you bring Ben back. Those are the rules.

The red Statement Edition jerseys are also reportedly returning, and those have their own baggage, Kawhi’s Game 7 shot in 2019, the Atlanta collapse in 2021 with Embiid banged up, the 2023 series slipping away to Boston, the Knicks stealing Game 1 in 2024. None of that is the jersey’s fault. It’s still not a good look to bring back the uniform everyone associates with getting bounced.

And then there’s the one that actually pisses me off: the black throwbacks from last season, worn for the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Finals team, might not be back at all. The reporting says it could be a Nike rule on how long a classic design stays in rotation, or it could just be that the anniversary tribute was always a one-year thing. Either way, nobody at the team has said anything definitive.

Why the 76ers can’t let the black jerseys walk

If there’s one piece of this jersey rumor mill that should actually worry a 76ers fan, it’s this one. The black throwbacks weren’t just well-liked, they were the best uniform this organization has put on the floor in years. Fans wanted them back. Fans wanted them permanent. And now, with LeBron James walking into a building that’s about to have more national television slots than it’s had in a long time, is exactly the wrong moment to shelve the one jersey everybody actually likes.

Bringing back the cream jerseys nobody asked for and the red jerseys tied to four different playoff gut-punches, while letting the black throwbacks quietly disappear after one season, would be a genuinely foolish decision. Not just underwhelming. Foolish. This is the version of the jersey that made people want to spend money. This is the version that made the arena look different on television. Retiring it after a single year, right as the roster gets its biggest talent infusion in a decade, would be a real travesty for a franchise that doesn’t have many uniform wins to point to.

None of this is locked in yet. But if the 76ers have any read on what their own fans actually respond to, the black jerseys stay. Everything else can go back in storage.
