The Cavan Sullivan show is reaching legendary status, and I’m here for every second of it. The 16-year-old phenom scored his third goal in as many games Saturday night, and in doing so became the youngest player in MLS history, and the first teenager EVER, to record a five-game goal contribution streak, doing it at 16 years and 342 days old.
This kid isn’t just good, he’s carving his name into the record books at an age when most of us were failing our learner’s permit test.
Cavan Sullivan Buries One
His brilliance has completely transformed the Union. Cavan Sullivan’s result-sealing goal capped a 2-0 win over CF Montreal at Subaru Park and extended Philly’s unbeaten run to eight games.
As a result, the Union are in an MLS Cup Playoff position for the FIRST time all season. Remember, this team was in dead last heading into the World Cup break.
Since Ryan Richter took the reins, they’ve gone 6-0-2 and clawed all the way into the playoff picture. That turnaround has Cavan Sullivan’s fingerprints all over it.
After tying Freddy Adu’s single-season goal contribution benchmark for a 16-and-under player last weekend, Cavan Sullivan now owns that record outright with 11 goal contributions on the season, four goals and seven assists.
He also helped the Union extend the longest streak in MLS history in which a teenager has scored or assisted for their club, now up to nine games. He’s not just breaking records, he’s setting the standard for youth development across the entire league.
After the goal, Sullivan paid homage to the biggest offseason acquisition in Philadelphia sports, none other than LeBron James himself. A Philly kid, breaking soccer records, tipping his cap to the King who just came to town. That’s the kind of crossover moment that makes this city special, and it’s exactly why Cavan Sullivan has become must-watch every single week.
LeBron is the King, Cavan Sullivan is the Fresh Prince and the future of American soccer is doing all of this in a Union kit right in front of us. Records tumbling, the team surging into the playoffs, and a 16-year-old leading the charge with style. It doesn’t get much better than this.
