Flyers Rookie Game 1 Takeaways

Ladies and gentlemen, we officially have hockey back on our screens. The Flyers welcomed the New York Rangers to Allentown to square off in Rookie Game 1 of this two-game weekend.

Flyers hockey was BACK in a big way:

The Flyers won 3-2 thanks to a strong performance from Carson Bjarnason and goals from Matthew Gard (57th overall in 2025), Cole Knuble (103rd overall in 2023), and Alex Bump (133rd overall in 2022).

Now I want to recap and talk about some of the players that opened my eyes tonight.

Alex Bump

Bump started the game slowly but picked up the pace as it wore on. He displayed his puck-carrying ability and shot throughout the game. His assist on the Knuble goal was beautiful and something I have wanted to see more out of him. I can’t see him starting anywhere but the NHL unless he has a terrible camp, but the Flyers’ abundance of wingers may naturally send Bump to the AHL to start the season; he’ll be the first call-up if that’s the case.

Cole Knuble

I think you could make a pretty solid argument that Knuble was the best player on the ice tonight. He doesn’t have eye-popping skill or McDavid-like skating ability, but he’s everywhere all the time. He has a relentless motor, a high hockey IQ, and is more skilled than even I gave him credit for since being drafted by the Flyers in 2023. He doesn’t have his dad’s size, but I think he has better hands and thinks the game a little better than his old man. And that’s saying something because Mike Knuble was a pretty good player. Cole opened my eyes during Flyers development camp back in the summer, and he continued that eye-opening with his strong play tonight. 

Alex Ciernik 

Ciernik is another player that I have kept my eye on for a while now, and he is now finally starting to catch the eyes of other people. He can really skate and has subtle puck skills. Love his ability to take pucks off walls and hold defensive players on his back despite his smaller frame. Quick and twitchy with the puck is how I would describe him. Good forechecker for his size. Had numerous setups with subtle passes through tight lanes tonight. He signed his ELC back in March. Started his season in Liiga and then finished the year in HockeyAllsvenskan. Excited to see what he does in the AHL this year. Tonight was a good start for the 22-year-old.

Maksim Sokolovskii 

Sokolovskii is quickly becoming my favorite prospect in the Flyers pool. Yeah, he took 2 penalties tonight (and the Rangers scored on both of them), but I’m not really worried about that. The things that frustrated me about his game tonight (wasn’t a lot) can be coached out of him. What you can’t teach his the skating ability this kid has at the size he is. And on top of that, his ability to handle the puck to go along with it. He placed himself back into the play in two strides and poke-checked a puck away from danger numerous times tonight. His skating + ability to attack his own blue line and shut down rushes down is a genuine superpower. His work in corners to cut plays off and create loose pucks for his center and defensive partner to pick up and advance is already good.

He still obviously needs a couple more years before we see him in the NHL, but man oh man is he a really, really fun prospect. I can see where they went: “Yeah, Xavier Villenueve is really fun, but this guy might be an actual hockey alien.”

Brek Liske and Spencer Gill

I’m going to put Brek Liske and Spencer Gill in the same paragraph. I thought both looked good tonight. Neither pops out at you with elite traits, but both are good all around defenseman. They both can make plays under pressure really well and move pucks quickly. They both can even jump up on the play and chip in offensively if need be. I think Liske has more offensive upside, but they both have very similar games that intrigue me. Who doesn’t love a solid-sized right-handed defenseman who can skate, move pucks well, and chip in a little offensively at times?

Carson Bjarnson

Bjarnson was very good tonight. The two power-play goals weren’t on him, and I thought he made a couple of very nice, timely saves throughout the game. He is someone who is looking to have a bounce-back year, and tonight was a solid start for him. 

Honorable Mentions:

Ilya Pautov 

This is more because I personally like this kid, and I was actively looking for him tonight. Pautov is another Flyer who recently signed his ELC. I thought he flashed some nice skill at times tonight. It wasn’t every shift, but he did have a couple of setups for genuine scoring chances off of passes. He played in the VHL and MHL last year with some pretty poor showings. I’m hoping the fresh start in NA helps him a little. Not a “WOW” showing, but I thought he had a couple of plays worth mentioning.

Jett Luchanko

Jett had a weird game. He started pretty slowly in the first period. Got knocked on his ass a couple of times, but he settled into the game pretty well after that. Pautov found him (in the skates, kind of) for a mini breakaway in the 1st period, but he wasn’t able to pot it.

He showed off his skating ability in the 3rd period, where he took the puck from Pautov just above his own defensive faceoff dot and skated swiftly through the defense and found Alex Bump for a goal. He then followed that up with a brutal turnover in his own zone, where he just threw a puck out front of his goal, which resulted in a high-end scoring chance for the Rangers.

The skating ability is there; I don’t think anyone is going to argue that. And it was nice to see him show off some of that playmaking ability that IS in there, but I just need more from him personally.

Ty Murchison

I saw Murchison almost go end-to-end tonight, and I sat up in my chair and went, “WAS THAT MURCHISON?!” Murchison played 3 games last year with the big club last season. He didn’t blow the doors down by any means, but I thought he filled in pretty well for a guy that not a lot of Flyers fans had on their radar beforehand.

He continued the trend of solid play with a good game tonight. He’s more of a stay-at-home defenseman who clears the crease, goes into the corners, gets dirty, and gets pucks loose. He screams Nick Seeler replacement to me.
