Matt Cord is coming back for a 29th season as Sixers PA announcer

Matt Cord announced Wednesday that he will return for a 29th season as the Sixers’ public address announcer, walking back the retirement he revealed last year. Cord made the announcement on 93.3 WMMR.

Cord had planned to step away after the 2025-26 season. The Sixers were eliminated by the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs, and Cord said at the time he was ready to “go out on top.”

The offseason changed his mind. “They made a trade for Jaylen Brown on July 1,” Cord said. “…And then on July 24, LeBron James signed with the Sixers.”

Cord will be back on the mic Oct. 22 for the Sixers’ home debuts of both players.

Cord also said Allen Iverson, the subject of his signature PA call, was one of several people who reached out over the summer asking him to reconsider retirement.

When Cord first announced his retirement, the response from fans was significant. He told PhillyVoice in April that he didn’t expect the reaction he got. “Everybody wants to matter in their jobs,” he said. “It made me realize, like, ‘Wow, I kind of mattered to this job.'”

After the offseason moves, Cord decided he wanted to be the one introducing James, Brown and the rest of the 2026-27 Sixers roster as the season begins.
