Eagles embarrassed in Chicago, and the D’Marco Jackson hit on Jalen Hurts is where it all turned

Well, that was a dumpster fire. Jalen Hurts and the Birds went into Soldier Field on Monday night and got run off the field 27-7 by a Bears team playing its backup quarterback, and it’s their first loss of the season.

There’s no sugarcoating the second half but if you want to know where this game flipped, it was midway through the second quarter when D’Marco Jackson launched himself into Jalen Hurts after he was already out of bounds.

D’Marco Jackson Knew What He Was Doing

Jalen Hurts took off scrambling to the right, got to the first-down marker and stepped out of bounds. Jackson got there a beat late and drilled him in the shoulder anyway, and Hurts went down hard. Everybody watching knew exactly what that was. It was a cheap shot on a quarterback who was already off the field of play.

Jackson did get flagged for unnecessary roughness, but it didn’t even count because the Eagles had a hold earlier in the play. So the Bears got a free shot on the Eagles’ franchise quarterback and walked away without a penalty.

If that’s Patrick Mahomes going down on the sideline, they stop the game, pull the tape frame by frame and launch a federal investigation. Hurts gets drilled out of bounds and the league shrugs.

D’Marco Jackson – DIRTY

Nick Sirianni wasn’t shrugging. He went right at Jackson on the sideline and was caught yelling “You’re a pussy, you’re a pussy!” at him. That’s the right reaction. You take a late shot at my quarterback, you’re going to hear about it, and Sirianni made sure Jackson heard it.

The Concussion Check Killed the Drive:

Jalen Hurts got up on his own and walked back onto the field looking completely fine. It didn’t matter. Officials pulled him anyway and sent him to the blue medical tent to be checked for a concussion, and Hurts looked furious about it.

That’s where the momentum died.

The Eagles were a few yards from the end zone, and Andy Dalton came in cold to finish the drive. The Bears stuffed them twice and then picked off Dalton to end the threat entirely.

I’m not saying Hurts punches it in for sure, but the Eagles went from knocking on the door to walking away with nothing, and the play that caused it was a late hit that didn’t even cost Chicago yardage.

Sirianni was measured about it at halftime, telling ESPN it was frustrating but the doctors have to do their job and protect the players. That’s fine. The doctors aren’t the problem. The problem is that a dirty hit changed the game and the guy who threw it got away clean.

Jalen Hurts Came Back and Answered:

Hurts was cleared by the team doctors and the independent evaluator, but by then the Bears had marched all the way down the field after the interception and tacked on a 29-yard field goal from Cairo Santos.

The next time the Eagles got the ball, Hurts showed everyone he was just fine. He led a quick touchdown drive before halftime, hit DeVonta Smith for a huge 30-yard gain and then punched it in himself on a 1-yard run with time expiring.

Jalen Hurts barely got the snap off before the clock hit zero. He went 10 of 13 for 111 yards in the first half, and that score cut Chicago’s lead to three at the break. After everything that happened, the Eagles walked into the locker room right in the game.

Then the Second Half Happened:

This is the part nobody in that locker room should be able to explain away. The Bears scored 17 unanswered points in the second half and blew the game open with Case Keenum at quarterback. Case Keenum.

The Eagles defense let a backup put up points all half, and the offense couldn’t do anything to answer. Hurts finished 16 of 25 for 153 yards, and there wasn’t much help around him once the game started slipping.

The Jackson hit flipped the momentum, and the league should be embarrassed it went unpunished. But the Eagles had a whole second half to take it back and never did. One loss doesn’t change what this team is, and Jalen Hurts proved again Monday night that he’s as tough as any quarterback in this league.

Now they need to clean it up and go take it out on the Rams next week.
