Eagles promote Kenny Moore to active roster after rough night for the secondary

The Eagles promoted veteran defensive back Kenny Moore from the practice squad to the active roster Tuesday, six days after signing him.

The Birds’ secondary had a rough night in Monday’s loss to the Bears, and the team is looking for options at safety.

Moore is a former Pro Bowl slot corner who spent nine seasons with the Colts and had 21 interceptions there. Other than rookie training camp with the Patriots in 2017, he has played his entire career in Indianapolis. He was out of work from May until the Birds signed him last week.

The Eagles have had an open spot on the 53-man roster for several weeks, so they didn’t have to cut anyone to make room.

Moore also overlapped with Nick Sirianni, Jonathan Gannon and Shane Steichen in Indianapolis.

Eagles safety play is the problem

Moore was mainly a slot corner with the Colts, but he says he can play safety. Asked how much he practiced there, he said: “Quite a bit. It’s still a comfort space of playing safety.”

That matters because the Birds’ current safeties haven’t held up. Neither Marcus Epps nor Drew Mukuba has played well, and Vic Fangio started mixing in Michael Carter for Epps on Monday night. Out of 90 safeties with at least 50 snaps, Pro Football Focus ranks Epps 42nd and Mukuba 77th.

Cornerback isn’t the issue. Quinyon Mitchell and Riq Woolen play outside and Cooper DeJean plays inside. Fangio said last week he wouldn’t move DeJean to safety full-time, which could have opened the slot for Moore. DeJean does play safety in base before sliding to the slot when opponents go to three receivers.

What’s next for the Eagles

Moore could play Sunday against the Rams at Lincoln Financial Field, which would be his first game in an Birds uniform at the Linc. The Eagles are 2-1 and the Rams are 1-2. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. on FOX. The Eagles opened as home underdogs.

Whether Moore ends up at safety or nickel, the Birds needed a change in the secondary. Now they’ve made one.
