Every Phillies player with a no-trade clause, and why it doesn’t really matter
With the offseason here and Bryce Harper already saying this team is going to look a lot different, here’s an updated list of the Phillies who can block a trade:
Phillies that have No-Trade Clauses:
- Bryce Harper: Full no-trade clause in his contract
- Trea Turner: Full no-trade clause in his contract
- Kyle Schwarber: 10-and-5 rights
- Zack Wheeler: 10-and-5 rights
- Aaron Nola: 10-and-5 rights
- J.T. Realmuto: 10-and-5 rights
Hot Take: No One On This List Is Going Anywhere
Any player with 10 years of major league service time who has spent the last five straight seasons with the same team gets 10-and-5 rights. Once a player has them, he can veto any trade, no matter what the deal looks like.
Honestly, I don’t want to trade any of these guys. Harper and Schwarber are still the heart of this lineup. JT Realmuto is the best catcher this franchise has had in decades and while production has definitely fallen off, there’s no one on the farm that will replace him. As for Wheeler and Nola, they are exactly where they should be in the rotation that also includes Andrew Painter, Cristopher Sanchez, and Jesus Luzardo.
The problems with this team aren’t coming from this group.
The only name worth even thinking about is Trea Turner.
He went from winning the batting title at .304 in 2025 to hitting .242 and leading the majors in outs this season. The issue is that Turner signed through 2033 on an 11-year, $300 million deal, and between that contract and his full no-trade clause, moving him isn’t realistic.
It’s not happening, so there’s no point wasting energy on it. The Phillies need to get him right and maybe even need to move him to the outfield. That’s what’s more likely than straight-up getting rid of him.
Everyone Else Is Fair Game:
The good news is that nobody else in this lineup has any protection. Outside of those six names, every position player on this roster can be moved, and after an offense that fell from fourth to 22nd in OPS, they should all be on the table.
If Dombrowski is serious about this team looking different, the changes need to come from the rest of the roster, not from the core that got the Phillies to five straight postseasons.
