Eagles injuries Week 5

Eagles injury list keeps growing ahead of Week 5 game against Jaguars in London

The Eagles lost 24-20 to the Rams on Sunday, fell to 2-2, and now have to figure out who can play against the Jaguars in London.

Seven players were ruled out before kickoff. Four more got hurt during the game. By the end, the Eagles did not have nine starters on the field. Most of the damage is on the offense.

Eagles Running Back Room Is Down to Shipley and the Practice Squad

Saquon Barkley hurt his hamstring on the first drive Sunday and did not return. He is considered week-to-week, and an NFL source told Jeff McLane he is unlikely to play against the Jaguars. Nick Sirianni said Monday that Barkley’s status is to be determined.

Tank Bigsby is headed to injured reserve and will have surgery. He is expected to miss four to six weeks. Bigsby had 28 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown this season.

That leaves Will Shipley as the only running back on the active roster. Dameon Pierce, Carson Steele and Jaydon Blue are on the practice squad. If Barkley sits, the Eagles will be leaning on Shipley and whoever they elevate from that group.

Eagles Offensive Line and Pass Catchers Are Short Everywhere

Four offensive linemen are in question. Landon Dickerson is on injured reserve. He could be back after Week 5 but that’s still up in the air. Lane Johnson missed the Rams game for personal reasons and his status for London is unknown. Fred Johnson has missed two games with a knee injury. Cam Jurgens is in the concussion protocol after reporting symptoms following the game.

Jurgens moved to left guard when Dickerson went down, with Drew Kendall at center. Jurgens has struggled there, especially in pass protection. If he can’t go, Willie Lampkin would take over at left guard. A line that already could not hold up against the Rams’ pass rush is about to get thinner.

The pass catchers are in the same shape. DeVonta Smith missed the Rams game with a hamstring injury, the first game he has missed this season. Reports say it is a multi-week injury. Hollywood Brown has missed two straight games with an ankle injury. Dallas Goedert has missed two games with a knee injury and was expected to be out three to four weeks. Eli Stowers has been on injured reserve since training camp and could stay there all season.

Eagles Defense Lost Starters Too

Quinyon Mitchell left in the second half with a knee injury. Testing is still being done, but it is not considered serious. Jonathan Greenard left with an ankle injury, is considered day-to-day and avoided a major injury. He already missed training camp and the first two games with a pectoral injury. Zack Baun missed the Rams game with a concussion, and the hope is that he clears the protocol this week. Marcus Epps was a late scratch with a groin injury.

The Eagles led by 10 with about six minutes left and the Rams backed up at their own 2-yard line. They lost anyway, due in large part to the mounting injuries plaguing this team.

The Eagles Offense Has Problems Injuries Do Not Explain

The injuries are real, and they still do not cover what happened on offense Sunday.

The Eagles went 0-for-12 on third down. Seven of those failures came with fewer than five yards to go. They were shut out 14-0 in the second half after being outscored 17-0 after halftime the week before. That is 31-0 over two weeks. Sean Mannion has called plays in four NFL games, and on fourth-and-goal from the 2 in the fourth quarter, the Eagles had nothing dependable to run.

Going for it there was the right call. Jalen Hurts bobbling the snap on third-and-2 at the goal line was not. A clean handoff to Bigsby could have ended the game. Mannion and Hurts have to find a handful of plays that work for five yards, and they have to find them now.

The Jaguars allow 13.3 points per game, second best in the NFL. The Eagles have one week to find something that works on third down.
