Eagles sign QB Joe Milton off Cowboys practice squad with Jalen Hurts out indefinitely
The Eagles are signing quarterback Joe Milton off the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad, according to multiple reports Friday. The move comes one day after the Birds announced that Jalen Hurts has a superficial blood clot and is out indefinitely.
Hurts has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, and Tanner McKee will start in his place. Before this move, the Eagles had only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster: McKee and rookie Cole Payton.
Eagles Add Joe Milton to a Thin Quarterback Room
Milton is 26. He played at Michigan and Tennessee before the New England Patriots drafted him in the sixth round in 2024. He is known for his arm strength. His accuracy has been the question.
In one game with the Patriots, Milton went 22-of-29 for 241 yards and two touchdowns. New England traded him to Dallas in the 2025 offseason, and he backed up Dak Prescott last season, appearing in four games.
For his career, Milton has appeared in five games and has never started. He has completed 37 of 53 passes for 424 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Dallas left him off the initial 53-man roster this season. He cleared waivers and landed on the practice squad. Now the Eagles are giving him a spot on theirs.
What the Eagles Quarterback Depth Chart Looks Like Now
McKee, last year’s primary backup, gets the start against Carolina. Payton, a fifth-round pick out of North Dakota State, is likely to be the QB2 while Hurts is out. Milton gives the Eagles a third option behind them.
The signing may also close the door on an Birds reunion with Andy Dalton, who was released earlier this month and has reportedly been weighing multiple offers.
There is no timeline for Hurts. Until there is one, McKee is the starter, and the room behind him is Payton and Milton.
Eagles Pick Up Another Former Cowboy Before Dallas Visits
Milton is not the first player the Birds have taken from Dallas. Jaydon Blue, a former Cowboys offensive player, is on the Eagles’ practice squad. The Cowboys visit Philadelphia a week from Monday night.
Dallas had the chance to promote Milton and passed. The Eagles did not.
