Tyrese Maxey draws MVP chants after 15-point fourth quarter against Chicago

Tyrese Maxey heard MVP chants at the free throw line Monday night, and the Philadelphia crowd had a case. Maxey scored 26 points, handed out 11 assists and scored 15 of those points in the fourth quarter as the Sixers beat the Bulls 126-107 to improve to 7-1.

Maxey has heard MVP chants nearly every time he’s gotten to the free throw line this year. That’s because he’s earned it. The dude has been spectacular thus far.

He shot 10-of-15 from the floor and added four rebounds, two steals and two blocks last night. A Tyrese Maxey three-pointer with about six and a half minutes left gave Philadelphia a double-digit lead that Chicago never cut into again.

The 26 points were below his season average. Maxey came into the night at 29.6 points per game, second in the NBA. The Sixers still won by 19 because of everything else he did.

He started the first transition run of the game by stepping into a Matas Buzelis pass. In the first half, he and LeBron James combined for 14 assists and three turnovers. For the game, Maxey and James had 20 assists between them.

That is the part of the MVP case that matters. Plenty of players score 30. Maxey is doing it while sharing the ball with James and Jaylen Brown, guarding, and setting up teammates. Brown had 25 points and 11 rebounds on Monday. VJ Edgecombe had 21. Maxey had a hand in many of those baskets as a scorer, passer or defender.

The Tyrese Maxey MVP case runs through winning

The Sixers are 7-1 and top the East. Maxey scored 38 on Halloween in the comeback win at Charlotte and followed it with a quieter scoring night that still produced a 19-point win.

Eight games is eight games. The sample is small. But the early version of this argument is easy to make. The best team in the conference has Maxey as its leading scorer and one of its top playmakers.

The crowd said it. The Tyrese Maxey MVP chants on Monday were earned, and the next few weeks will show whether the rest of the league agrees. Detroit on Wednesday is the first test.
