Joe Milton couldn’t fix the Eagles as losing streak hits seven after 19-11 loss to the Giants
New quarterback, same garbage. The Giants beat the Eagles 19-11 on Sunday, stretching the losing streak to seven games and dropping the Birds to 2-7.
In case you were still holding on to the last glimmer of hope, just stick a fork in it because this season is dead.
Joe Milton got the start Sunday, 23 days after walking into the building, and it didn’t matter. The defense played its best half of the season, then took the second half off and let the Giants score on three straight possessions.
The Historically Bad Eagles
The last time the Eagles won a football game, Lane Johnson was at right tackle and I was blacked out drunk on Broadway in Nashville.
Feels like a different decade.
Seven straight losses ties for the ninth-longest streak in franchise history. The only longer one in the last 25 years was the eight-game collapse in 2012, Andy Reid’s final season. They’ve also now lost four straight games by eight or more points, which has happened just nine times in team history.
That’s the company this team is keeping now. The 2012 Eagles. Congratulations.
The problem isn’t one unit. It’s all of them. When the defense shows up, the offense doesn’t. When the offense finds something, the defense folds. Special teams has turned into a weekly highlight reel for the other guys. There is nothing this team does well consistently. After the bye, it’s the 6-2 Steelers, then a trip to Dallas.
Will the Eagles ever win again? Seriously, does anyone know?
Joe Milton: rough, raw and running for his life
Milton went 18-for-34 for 169 yards, no touchdowns and no picks. He took off for a 19-yarder and a 24-yarder and finished with 64 rushing yards.
He also got sacked seven times. Some of that was on him, since his pocket presence is about what you’d expect from a guy who’s been here three weeks. A lot of it was on an offensive line that couldn’t block a stiff breeze.
His receivers didn’t help either, dropping 4-5 easily catchable footballs.
You could see why the Eagles made the move. He made plays Tanner McKee simply can’t make, and after three straight weeks of McKee dinking and dunking his way to losses, that’s at least something.
Here’s to Joe Milton getting better after the bye week, I guess.
A great half for the Eagles… then nothing
In the first half, this defense looked like the unit Howie paid $328 million for with five sacks and big hits all over the field. The Giants ran it 10 times for 16 yards. Zack Baun, Jalen Carter, Moro Ojomo, Nolan Smith and Jordan Davis were everywhere. Physical, nasty, dominant.
Where the hell has that been all year?
Then they came out of halftime and the Giants scored on three straight drives to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 19-8 lead. The dagger was a touchdown pass from Jameis Winston, who only got in because JJ McCarthy got banged up.
The talent is there. We saw it for 30 minutes but this defense can’t string together a full game, and with this offense, 30 good minutes doesn’t win you anything.
Is Sirianni coaching for his job?
I don’t think Nick Sirianni is in real trouble. Not this year. When your Super Bowl MVP quarterback goes down and the injury list keeps getting longer every week, it’s hard to pin all of this on the head coach, and I don’t expect Jeffrey Lurie to but I sure as hell would like to see a little more fight.
I’m done with the woe-is-me postgame pressers and the dark cloud that’s been hanging over this team for two months. Nobody wants to hear about how hard it is. Every team in this league deals with injuries.
Either show up expecting to win football games or don’t, and if you don’t, there should be no job security for anyone in this entire organization, from the head coach on down. Eight games left. Let’s see who actually wants to be here.
