Digital portal linking New York and Ireland has already gotten out of hand
We’re not even a full week into the launch of the New York-Ireland digital portal and things have already gone off the rails.
On May 9, New York City and Dublin, Ireland unveiled two huge circular screens that will livestream 24/7 from one city to the other. In short, New Yorkers and the Irish will be able to interact with each other via video chat whenever they want.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what these things are from Portal.org, “Portals are technology art sculptures. They connect to a network of identical sculptures all over the planet. Each Portal is located in the public space, providing a real-time, unfiltered livestream 24/7 that is frequently rotating between different Portal locations on Earth.“
While the concept of these things is pretty cool, it’s pretty quickly gotten completely out of hand. More specifically, once New Yorkers and the Irish got their hands on it, the novel concept turned into a contest of ‘who can show the other country the most ridiculous thing on livestream.’
Example A — Ireland reminds New York about 9/11
This is exactly what these portals should be used for in my humble opinion
Not to be outdone by the Irish, New York decided to fight back. It didn’t exactly hit as hard as a picture of 9/11, but mooning the camera is always a sure-fire comeback.
There were some wholesome examples of the portals being used for good, like this Irish lady showcasing her tap dancing skills and the good people of NY participating along with her.
I’d like to think this portal between Ireland and New York will do more good than harm, but I also think the idea of it being used to talk shit on each other is hilarious. As much as I like to bash on New York, those people know how to talk shit. I don’t know any Irish people personally, but based on the shit talking ability they showed above, I think they’re more than up to the task.
At the end of the day, we’re all scumbags. Whether you live in the United States or not. Embracing each other’s scumbag tendencies through this portal might actually be the best outcome here and bring the world a little closer together.
