Phillies Spring Training Notes: February 28th

Quick notes from today’s action down in Clearwater: The Phillies beat the Braves 6-5. Harper, Segura, Bohm shine. Nola – not so much.

We touched on most of this before the game in the preview.Of course – no TV coverage with a bunch of notables playing. And ya know – Bryce Harpers 1 year anniversary.

Aaron Nola got a bit roughed up today. 2 innings pitched, 6 hits, 2 earned runs, BUT – 6 strikeouts too. He’ll be just fine. Definitely not worried about a bad Spring Training outing.

Anniversary boy Bryce Harper crushes a 3-run double. Again, NO TV COVERAGE. But apparently, it almost was a grand-slam. The Phillies (kind of) posted a video on Twitter:

Shortly after – Jean Segura knocked home Harper with a single to centerfield. Klentak and the Phillies are going to have a somewhat tough decision to make sooner than later. Alec Bohm is having a hell of a Spring Training and tallied yet another hit today. He’s going to be a tough send down to AAA.

Since the beginning of Spring Training – I figured this would be the case. Ideally, we can move Segura and give the kid a shot at 3rd. That happening immediately is unlikely, but the Phillies should start considering it sooner than later.

And of course, there was NO TV COVERAGE to watch Bryson Stott come to the plate with the bases loaded (Bohm got a hit in the 9th too), at the bottom of the 9th. Stott grounded into a fielder’s choice but with a throwing error, Garlick came around to score and win the game.

Notables:

It’s also good news that Girardi is sticking with one position for Scott Kingery at 2nd. Comments from Scotty today indicate that he’s happy with the decision too.

The rest of the pitching staff held it down until Zachary Warren blew a 3-run lead in the 9th. Phillies win and enter the weekend with the Blue Jays tomorrow and Orioles Sunday.

Enjoy the weekend everyone. Baseball is almost here.
