Eagles Proposed an Alternative to Onside Kicks Today and It’s Awesome

The Philadelphia Eagles have submitted a proposed rule change today suggesting an alternative to the onside kick. The rule change would allow a trailing team to keep possession if it converts a 4th-and-15 from its own 25-yard line.

I absolutely love this. An onside kick is cool when it happens but I’m all for taking a new approach and putting the game back in the hands of the offense immediately rather than relying on a prayer from the special teams unit.
This isn’t the first time the proposal has been sent to the NFL – it’s been discussed for years with little to no traction. Maybe this year will be different given the player safety concerns on special teams.
We’ll see how the NFL reacts to the proposal. All I can think about is how loud the Linc would be with the ball in Carson’s hands on 4th & 15 with the game on the line.
